TOWNSHIP STORIES

Scout's Honor

Two boy scouts from King of Prussia, brothers James and Patrick Shelton (pictured right), received

the National Honor Medal for Heroism during a ceremony in Upper Merion on Saturday, June 14th.

The teens witnessed a horrific accident on the Pennsylvania Turnpike last fall in which an out-of-control SUV struck a Range Rover, causing it to flip in the air and disappear over a 50-foot embankment.  After calling  911, the boys ran down the highway until they heard screams for help, at which point they climbed the guard rail and ran down the deep slope.  When they reached the bottom, they found a woman pinned under the Range Rover.  Along with the woman's husband and a passerby they managed to lift the vehicle off the woman.  When the family began screaming that their 7-year old daughter was missing, the scouts searched for her and discovered her on the shoulder of the turnpike, where she had been ejected before the vehicle went down the embankment.  The boys used their first aid skills to stabilize the badly injured mother and daughter until paramedics arrived.

The Boy Scouts of America's National Court of Honor cited the brothers  for "Unusual Heroism with Considerable Risk to Self."  The rescued family members, who suffered multiple, serious injuries requiring prolonged hospital stays, participated in the ceremony, pinning the medals on the scouts."It was probably the scariest night of both of our lives, but we can attribute our Scouting training and first aid knowledge with our ability to respond in this emergency," said James, an Eagle Scout from Troop 551. "We were very grateful to be able to assist them in this drastic time in their family," said Patrick, a Life Scout from Troop 551.
