Celebrating Women's History Month
Lise Meitner came from a Austrian Jewish family and in 1905 became one of the first women to obtain a doctorate in physics. After her graduation, she became a researcher, working with isotopes and x-ray equipment. By 1926, she had been apointed professor of physics at the prestigious University of Berlin, and in the 1930s she began her research on uranium enrichment. Doctor Meitner was credited with co-discovering nuclear fission in 1939, which earned her international fame. Scientists around the world raced to develop nuclear power and capabilities; the nuclear age had arrived. For further reading on Lise Meitner's many unheralded contributions, check out this article.
