A Taste of Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic
What more than a mini-Peace Corps experience could convince university students that service as a Peace Corps Volunteer is - or maybe is not - the right opportunity to pursue after graduation? That's what 17 Arizona State University (ASU) students did when they took part in NPCA's Next Step Travel program to the Dominican Republic in March.

It was an eye-opening experience that in some students sparked an interest in Peace Corps, in others stoked a desire to become Volunteers or, with a few, compelled them to consider other options.

In collaboration with on-campus Peace Corps Prep programs at colleges and universities around the U.S., NPCA is opening the door to prospective Peace Corps applicants to have a first-hand look at what it's like to serve as a Volunteer. Students immerse themselves in the language and culture of their host country and work on community projects while interacting with Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs) in the field.

More about the ASU experience.
Cuba Before the Big Change
"We were in Cuba just in time," says John Coyne. Referencing a recent New York Review of Books story by Alma Guillermoprieto entitled Cuba: The Big Change, John notes "The best paragraph is what we remember, and which will soon be gone, I'm afraid." Guillermoprieto had written "Tourists strolled through Old Havana in the thousands, thrilled by the absolute newness of the place and relishing the absence of things that Cuba no doubt will soon acquire. There are no advertisements, no traffic jams, no shopping malls, no 24-hour Internet and its accompanying addictions. A vacation in Cuba is a respite from capitalism.

Coyne (RPCV Ethiopia 1962-64; Ethiopia staff 1965-67; PC staff 1994-2000) was one of 25 Peace Corps community members that traveled with NPCA President & CEO Glenn Blumhorst in October 2015 to Cuba through NPCA's Next Step Travel. Guillermoprieto had more recently gone to Cuba when President Obama was there, accompanied by representatives of Google, Paypal, Airbnb and the various airlines that will soon be serving Cuba from the U.S.

No doubt, Cuba is changing quickly. Now may be your last chance to see socialist Cuba like it was for over five decades, before the big change that is both eagerly awaited and feared by its people. NPCA will take you there, with our next departure scheduled for October 15, 2016. We only have a few spaces left to travel with fellow RPCVs, former Peace Corps staff and friends and family of the Peace Corps community.

Act Now in Support of Peace Corps!
Peace Corps' Congressional House funding body will soon be deciding whether to give the Peace Corps a budget increase.

Congresswomen Kay Granger (R-TX-12) and Nita Lowey (D-NY-17) are crucial voices on that funding body. Please ask them to provide $450 million for the Peace Corps in FY 2017, and thank them for their strong support of the Peace Corps and its ideals.

If you are a constituent of Congresswomen Granger or Lowey, take action here.

Everyone else? Please take action here.

This recent article in Politico written by Retired General Anthony Zinni and Retired Admiral James Stavridis highlights the importance of well-funded foreign assistance programs, including the Peace Corps.
