Health Justice Awareness Day - June 25

Preparations are underway for the first annual Peace Corps Health Justice Awareness Day on June 25th

The purpose of this day is to bring more attention to the challenges and needs of those within the Peace Corps family who have faced a variety of health, financial and other challenges stemming from injuries or illness incurred during their Peace Corps service, and to begin a broad national conversation on how we can better address these challenges.

Be part of this important national conversation.  NPCA Advocacy Director Jonathan Pearson will kick things off with an initial Awareness Day gathering in Chico, California on June 2nd.

Contact us at advocacy@peacecorpsconnect.org for more information (including a sample Discussion Guide) or to organize an Awareness Day event in your area.

Farr, Garamendi at Peace Corps Connect

From Colombia and Ethiopia to the halls of Congress, we're pleased that RPCV Congressmen Sam Farr (D-CA) and John Garamendi (D-CA) will be with us at Peace Corps Connect-Berkeley, on June 5-6.

Now is the time to register for a long weekend full of engaging speakers, dynamic workshops and opportunities to network and share your Peace Corps stories!

Former Directors Sign Peace Corps Letter

The request for $410 million for the Peace Corps has another strong voice of support.  Eight former Directors of the Peace Corps have sent a letter to key congressional leaders urging support for the President's Fiscal Year 2016 funding request. Read More.
Take Action: Peace Corps Caucus

We're up to 43 Representatives who so far joined the bi-partisan House Peace Corps Caucus. That's more than half-way to the previous Congress, when 83 Congressmen/women joined the Caucus. Follow this link to see the current House members of the Caucus and to take action.
WANTED: Advocacy Coordinators

Do you live west of the Mississippi River and want to help lead NPCA grassroots advocacy efforts?

Our list of state and regional advocacy coordinators has grown to 38!  But we still have many openings, especially in the Midwestern and Western U.S.

We do have some great coordinators in those regions (including our Featured Advocate).  But we are seeking more coordinators in states like Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Arizona, Washington and Oregon. Requirements here.
May Global Issue: Road Safety

Got a story to tell about international road safety?

NPCA is a member of the 3-Star Coalition which is advocating for the design and construction of safer roads in the developing world, with a special focus on roads financed by the World Bank.

Road safety is our May Global Issue of the Month, and we are collecting testimonies from RPCVs about how international road safety has impacted them or the communities where they served. Take action.
Featured Advocate: Suzanne Smith

This month's Featured Advocate is an Advocacy Coordinator whose most recent work involved leading an important Denver-based solidarity event in conjunction with NPCA's National Day of Action.

That's one of many activities Suzanne Smith has helped guide in Colorado since getting involved following her Peace Corps service in Mongolia.

Advocacy Photo of the Month!

Among those recently joining the House Peace Corps Caucus? Connecticut Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty.

Prior to joining the caucus, an RPCV Capitol Hill meeting took place when (r) Connecticut advocate Ed Pikaart (Kenya 2013-14) sat down with Michael Carlo (Ukraine 2009-11), legislative staff for Congresswoman Esty.

Michael is one of several dozen RPCVs working as staff on Capitol Hill.  Additional thanks to him for providing insight at a March 4th Day of Action training session.
