Ralph Bolton Wins 2015 Sargent Shriver Award
The Sargent Shriver Award for Distinguished Humanitarian Service is awarded by the National Peace Corps Association to Returned Peace Corps Volunteers who continue to make a sustained and distinguished contribution to humanitarian causes at home or abroad, or are innovative social entrepreneurs whose actions will bring about significant long-term change. 

This year's winner is Ralph Bolton (Peru 1962-1965) in recognition of his creation and operation of The Chijnaya Foundation, a nonprofit that addresses the needs of poor communities in the Altiplano (high plain) region of Southern Peru.

Berhane Daba to Speak at Peace Corps Connect
Berhane Daba
This year's recipient of the Harris Wofford Global Citizen Award is Berhane Daba of Ethiopia. As president and founder of Ethiopian Women with Disabilities National Association (EWDNA), she works to empower women with disabilities with the skills and confidence they need to become economically independent. Daba advocates for equal access so that they can reach their full potential--and she understands these obstacles because she has conquered them herself.

Afghanistan, Wisconsin-Madison Groups Win 2015 Ruppe Award
The winners of the 2015 Loret Miller Ruppe Award for Outstanding Community Service are Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Wisconsin-Madison and Friends of Afghanistan. The Loret Miller Ruppe Award, named for the revered 10th Director of the Peace Corps, is presented to an outstanding member group for a project or projects that promote the Third Goal of Peace Corps, foster group spirit and cooperation, and promote service or continue to serve host countries.

Peace Corps Mappers Create Maps for Cyclone Disaster Relief
Recently, through the wonders of technology, Vanuatu Peace Corps Volunteers and trainees were linked to a roomful of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs) half a world away for a collaborative "mappy hour" event at Peace Corps headquarters. Together, they created digital maps of Vanuatu, Tuvalu and Kiribati's inhabited islands for use in disaster relief and rescue efforts using OpenStreetMap, an online wiki map of the world.

Culture Change at the Peace Corps: Sexual Assault
Earlier this month, Peace Corps Director Carrie Hessler-Radelet took part in a panel discussion at the Center for Strategic and International Studies on changing the culture at the Peace Corps to better support Volunteers who experience, witness, or report sexual assault. NPCA, which has worked on this important issue, and attended the event.
