#LetGirlsLearn Launches - and the National Peace Corps Association is there!
It's not every day that the National Peace Corps Association (NPCA) gets a shout out from the First Lady, but on March 4 the Peace Corps community was the center of White House attention for the launch of Let Girls Learn, a powerful new collaboration to expand access to education for girls around the world.
Peace Corps Funding Letter Sign-Ons Set Record
Thursday was the last day for members of Congress to sign on to the "Dear Colleague" letter asking for strong funding support for the Peace Corps. Final results are not in, but as of 2 pm on Thursday the tally stood at 155 signatures -- four more than achieved last year. Stay tuned for photos and more from our March 5 National Day of Action.

National Design Competition Opens for Peace Corps Commemorative Work
Over several years, the NPCA worked with and on behalf of the Peace Corps community to secure congressional approval for a Peace Corps commemorative in the nation's capital. On January 24, 2014 the President signed the Peace Corps Commemorative Act into law.

Now, the Peace Corps Commemorative Foundation (PCCF) is working to make the commemorative a reality. 

On March 9, 2015, the PCCF announced Stage I of an open, two-stage, national design competition to select an artistically exceptional design concept for a permanent commemorative work in Washington, D.C.Read more

For more than 20 years, our Coverdell Peace Corps Fellows Program at Western Illinois University has been preparing the next generation of community development professionals. Our program provides a full tuition waiver, a graduate assistantship, and a paid internship. Fellows select a master's degree program from one of eight academic departments and are enrolled as AmeriCorps members. Learn more

It's that time of year again!

The Governance Committee of the NPCA Board of Directors announces the candidates for the 2015 elections for member-elected representatives to the Board. All terms are for three years.

NPCA members who reside in, belong to a member group in or who served in the Peace Corps in the regions listed below are eligible to vote and will receive voting information by "snail mail" and/or by email. Voting will take place primarily online between March 30 and April 30. Write-in candidates are also allowed. 
  • NortheastRuth Senchyna, nominated by Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Northeastern New York 
  • Mid-Atlantic and Nationwide: Randolph (Randy) A. Adams, nominated by Northern Virginia Returned Peace Corps Volunteers
  • Europe, North and East Africa: Linda Stingl, nominated by Friends of Kenya
Elected candidates will begin their terms on the NPCA Board at the June 7, 2015 Board meeting at Peace Corps Connect - Berkeley. Learn more

NPCA Makes New Grants to Community-Based Ebola Relief Efforts
The NPCA recently awarded a third round of grants -- totaling $26,360 -- to community-based projects for Ebola relief in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. 

As the number of Ebola cases ebbs, survivors need social support to reintegrate into their communities. Several grants were specifically awarded for sustainable projects addressing the problems of vulnerable populations, such as pregnant women, orphans and the elderly. Read more

Remember how NPCA represented the Peace Corps community last summer at the Aspen Institute's Franklin Project Gettysburg Summit on National Service

We continue to be very involved -- and want to let you know about this opportunity. 

The Ambassadors Program is a year-long leadership development program and local engagement strategy that will catalyze support for universal national service in communities across the country. The Franklin Project will recruit up to 50 emerging leaders from up to 35 communities across the country to take part in this new initiative. Deadline is March 23. Learn more 

"Father Ted" Hesburgh Had Close Ties to the Peace Corps Community
Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, CSC who passed away on February 27, had deep connections to the early founding years of the Peace Corps and beyond. Following his passing several returned Peace Corps Volunteers wrote letters to the editor and elsewhere to further illuminate that connection. Read more
