Berhane Daba: 2015 Wofford Award Winner
|
The National Peace Corps Association is pleased to announce that the winner of the 2015 Harris Wofford Global Citizen Award is Berhane Daba of Ethiopia, president and founder of Women with Disabilities Organization.
Suffering from polio and left on the streets of Huletta at the age of five, Berhane was placed with other orphaned and disabled children in a wing of the Princess Teshai Hospital. It was Peace Corps Volunteer Mary Myers-Bruckenstein who met Berhane and saw her as a valuable and unique person, taking her into her home. There, Berhane had the opportunity to heal, attend school and share with others the skills she learned. Her determination to overcome her own obstacles drove her to provide assistance to others, and led to her establishment of the Women with Disabilities Organization in Ethiopia. Berhane has traveled the world to champion the cause of equal access for the disabled.
Berhane will accept the Wofford Award at Peace Corps Connect in Berkeley, and then travel to Washington for meetings on Capitol Hill. Stay tuned for more details about this inspiring awardee!

Why We Give to NPCA: Cully and Bridget Davis
|
"The Hilton" probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the Peace Corps, but for Cully Davis, the San Francisco Hilton he sees from his office window serves as a daily reminder of where it all started.
Cully and Bridget Davis met there in 1991, during the three-day pre-departure staging event. "Seeing the Hilton," he says, "reminds me of the impact the Peace Corps experience had on our lives."
