Dear friends,
In its 35th anniversary year, the NPCA has made significant progress by redefining its vision, mission and strategic goals. The participatory process has been critical to addressing the needs of our core constituencies in the Peace Corps community, ensuring that we offer a clear and compelling value proposition to individual members and member groups. A new strategic plan for 2014-18 has emerged from this consultative process, which started with your inputs via a survey, presented in the August 2013 edition of this e-newsletter.
Our vision - A United and Vibrant Peace Corps Community - is both ambitious and inclusive, and our refreshed mission statement - To Champion Lifelong Commitment to Peace Corps Ideals - reflects the fact that the experience of most Peace Corps Volunteers in their service is life changing and lasting.
Going forward, all of the NPCA's programs and services will be closely aligned with two strategic goals: (1) enabling members and member groups to thrive, and (2) helping the Peace Corps be the best that it can be. While these goals echo the vision of our founders in 1979, the strategies that we have mapped out are based on current realities and have concrete action plans.
Thank you for your part in building a united and vibrant Peace Corps community! In service,
Glenn Blumhorst (RPCV Guatemala 1988-1991)
President

Nominate the Next Wofford Award Winner
In his acceptance speech, this year's Harris Wofford Global Citizen Award winner, Dr. Surin Pitsuwan of Thailand, thanked the Peace Corps community for launching him on a lifelong path of domestic and international public service. "In my case," he said, "you have snatched me from the tyrannical jaws of poverty and hopelessness." To recognize distinguished individuals like Dr. Surin, and amplify their stories of transformation, the NPCA established the Harris Wofford Global Citizen Award, which honors an outstanding global leader who grew up in a Peace Corps country, whose life was influenced by the Peace Corps, and whose career contributes significantly to their nation and the world. Nominations are open on a rolling basis, with a deadline of October 31, 2014 for consideration for the 2015 award.

Featured Group: Friends of Liberia
The West African nation of Liberia has been in the headlines in the past weeks as one of several nations confronting the deadly Ebola epidemic.
The Returned Peace Corps Volunteers, former Peace Corps staff and others who make up the Friends of Liberia (FOL) have surged into action. That's not surprising, as our August 2014 Featured NPCA member group has been active in addressing serious challenges within their country of Peace Corps service for more than four decades...

Nominate: Peace Corps Award Spotlights RPCV Diversity, Commitment to Service
For those even slightly familiar with Peace Corps history, you've almost definitely heard about Sargent Shriver, the first agency Director and the person credited right after President Kennedy with the agency's founding.
Lesser known but equally due founding credit is Franklin H. Williams (right, with Shriver), an African American civil rights lawyer, diplomat and foundation president who worked to improve interracial relations in the U.S. He joined Director Shriver as his Special Assistant in 1961 and later became the agency's Africa Regional Director.
Learn more about Williams, and the award named in his honor. Then nominate a deserving RPCV. Deadline is August 25, 2014.

"I'm an RPCV who served in El Salvador. SPEA's unique dual master's degree in public affairs and environmental science is helping me train as a scientist incorporating a full appreciation for the related policy implications and context. Receiving a Fulbright Grant for the coming year will enable me to continue researching the effects of air pollution on children's health in Santiago, Chile."
