Are you prepared for Peace Corps Week?
Greetings from National Peace Corps Association (NPCA) Global Education!
This first quarter of the calendar year is a busy one for those helping to "bring the world home" (the "Third Goal" of Peace Corps). With Peace Corps' 53rd birthday coming up, this is a perfect time to get involved!
We're excited to share resources to help you bring a global perspective to classrooms and communities. Be sure to check our website for the latest updates:
- Beyond the Golden Rule to the Platinum Rule! lesson to accompany the Winter 2013 (Vol. 26 #4) issue of WorldView magazine on Changemaking.
- WorldView magazine is a benefit of NPCA membership, so if you don't yet receive it, consider joining! The magazine features lots of great stories, photos and news updates for you and your students.
- Lesson plans, resources and opportunities for students and teachers in the Winter 2013 issue of Global Education News. Read below on how you or your students can write for the newsletter (deadline for the next issue: February 14).
These are just some of the ways we here at the NPCA carry out the Third Goal of the Peace Corps, bringing the world home. Read on!

Write for NPCA Global Education News
It seems we've had a lot of "snow days" around here this year. What a perfect time to work on your article or lesson plan for our next issue of Global Education News! And with Earth Day coming up, how about sharing your environmental concerns, lessons and resources? How is Earth Day recognized in your community? Whatever your global topic, we invite you to submit it for publication in our quarterly NPCA Global Education News.
Please send any resources, websites, book reviews, lessons, etc. that would be of interest and/or useful for our readers to our editor, Susan Neyer, at [email protected]. She would like to get items by February 14, or at least know by then to expect them.
You can download and read any issue of the newsletter from our website here.

Teachers for Global Classrooms
> from IREX and the Department of State:
Teachers for Global Classrooms (TGC) is a year-long professional development opportunity for U.S. middle and high school teachers, which aims to globalize teaching and learning in their classrooms and schools. Global education is integral to building 21st century skills. Accordingly, the TGC Program provides teachers with:
- An online course that helps teachers integrate global education objectives into their curriculum
- A Global Education Symposium in Washington, DC
- A two or three week international travel fellowship
- A chance to apply for grant funding for international projects for their school
- Continuing Education Units
TGC is funded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State and is implemented by IREX. Participants are selected through a national, open competition.
The application for the 2014-2015 program is now available online and will be open until March 11, 2014 (11:59 pm EST).

The Great Seed Search
> from Asia Society:
Agriculture has always been global. Consider the spice, rice, and tea trades of earlier centuries to now: trade is increasingly global given the ease of transport. Where did your coffee come from? Where are our soybeans going? Geography, politics, and resource distribution: these are all key issues in feeding the world's population today and in the future.
Classrooms must reflect this. There are many existing resources to help all teachers integrate a global perspective into their ag classrooms. The newest is The Great Seed Search, a game created by the American Farm Bureau in collaboration with Asia Society and Longview Foundation. Featured on the My American Farm website, students learn that seeds, those kernels so integral to life on this planet, originate from countries around the world. As they learn where seeds come from, they also learn about the cultures of those countries.
