Commemorative Victory! And, Positive Direction for Peace Corps Funding
It's been a busy week for Peace Corps matters on Capitol Hill.
A major victory was secured Monday evening when the House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved Peace Corps Commemorative legislation, an effort initiated by the National Peace Corps Association four years ago. The legislation now heads to President Obama for his signature. (Get the details here.)
As the week comes to a close, Congress is preparing to give final approval to a massive spending bill for the current fiscal year. Included in that bill is a 6.5 percent increase in current funding for the Peace Corps.

Why I Support the NPCA: Virginia Volpe
"My Peace Corps experience in Sri Lanka was life-changing," says Virginia Volpe, a member of the NPCA Leadership Circle.
As North American head of the Client Executive Team for the Securities and Fund Services business at Citi, Virginia now deals with hedge and private equity clients. This is a long way from the small village in the mountains of Sri Lanka where she worked in community development, but she says her Peace Corps experiences in 1992-1994 proved to be valuable life and career lessons.

Update on Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Seeking Kidney Match
Back in November we reached out to the community on behalf of Norman Sapoznik, a Returned Peace Corp Volunteer (Malaysia 1967-1969) who was in dire need of a kidney exchange. Three days after our Facebook post in November of 2013, Norman contacted us with good news: he had heard back from three people willing to be considered for matching! Unfortunately, we have just learned that for various reasons, these matches have not been able to progress, leaving Norman, who was poised for the transplant, in difficult circumstances once again... |

Where Are They Now? - Stomp Out Malaria Catches up with Returned Volunteers
Since 2011, more than 200 PCVs and Peace Corps staff from 24 countries have joined the Malaria Team and participated in an intensive technical training in Thies, Senegal known as Malaria Boot Camp. These trainings serve to empower and motivate a diverse collective of Peace Corps Volunteers, Response Volunteers, and staff to lead their posts' malaria efforts and facilitate projects for their volunteers in the field. As PCVs conclude their service and move on to jobs, graduate school, and new adventures, Stomp has noticed a remarkable trend. Many alumni of the Malaria Team are choosing to stay in the field! |
