Happy International Education Week!
Greetings from National Peace Corps Association (NPCA) Global Education!
This is a particularly busy month for global educators: International Education Week, online Global Education Conference, National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) national conference and more. Read below for more information on these exciting activities and how you can participate.
If you are heading to St. Louis for the NCSS conference next week, please be sure to head straight to the International Alley in the exhibit hall. We're proud to see how that has grown since we worked to start it 12 years ago. Say hello to our friends at Choices and iEARN, heading it up this year, and tell them I say "Bula!" (That's Fijian for "hello!")
We're excited to share resources to help you bring a global perspective to classrooms and communities. Be sure to check our website for the latest updates:
- Ideas for High School Physical Education and Family Studies Teachers to accompany the Fall 2013 (Vol. 26 #3) issue of WorldView magazine on Sports and the Peace Corps
- WorldView magazine is a benefit of NPCA membership, so if you don't yet receive it, consider joining! The magazine features lots of great stories, photos and news updates for you and your students.
- Lesson plans, resources and opportunities for students and teachers in the Fall 2013 issue of Global Education News. Read below on how you or your students can write for the newsletter (deadline for the next issue: November 25).
These are just some of the ways we here at the NPCA carry out the Third Goal of the Peace Corps, bringing the world home. Read on!
Peace,
Anne Baker Vice President National Peace Corps Association Returned Peace Corps Volunteer - Fiji 1985-1987

International Education Week
> from the U.S. Department of State: This week, November 11-15, marks the 14th annual International Education Week (IEW) - an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. This joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education is part of the U.S. Government's effort to promote programs in the United States and overseas that prepare Americans for a global environment and that attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States. The IEW 2013 website includes promotional materials, suggestions and resources for activities to hold during the week and beyond, information on a free virtual college fair, and opportunities to post and view planned events celebrating international educational exchanges around the world. We're also happy to share our IEW promotional video "International Education is for Everyone." Video messages from both Secretary Kerry and Secretary Duncan, will also be featured on the site! > Questions or comments? |
Global Education Conference
> from the Global Education Conference: Our 2013 Global Education Conference starts this coming Monday, November 18th, and runs 24-hours a day for five days. It's online, awesome, free, and all about increasing opportunities for connecting classrooms, supporting cultural awareness, and recognizing diversity and educational access for all. The call for proposals is being extended until November 17th, the day before the conference. Can you believe it?! It's just one more way that a virtual conference rocks the traditional conference model. We've also issued our call for volunteers. If you haven't been a volunteer moderator at one of our virtual events before, you may not know what you're missing. Really, it's a blast. Do join us. Finally, we're super-excited about our new "Education for All" conference strand, which is being coordinated by the Global Campaign for Education-US. Organizations and coalitions like the Global Campaign for Education are working to ensure that everyone has an equitable access to a quality education, and are advocating for additional financial resources, enhanced professional development, smaller classroom size, adequate educational materials, and access to technology that links students and teachers to information and collaboration with peers. |
iEARN is excited to announce that it is currently inviting educators, high schools and youth organizations in the U.S. to apply for participation in its Photojournalism 2.014 program. The program will engage educators and youth in Pakistan, Tajikistan, and the United States in cross-cultural collaboration to help them develop photojournalism and media skills through the lens of Heritage, Hunger, and Food Security. Included in the program will be webinars and an online course for educators; photojournalistic education and fieldwork for students; and participation in a regional workshop and exhibition in Tajikistan for select educators and students at the conclusion of the program. iEARN's Photojournalism 2.014 program is made possible through funding from the U.S. Department of State and sponsorship from the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, and the program will begin in January. To find out more and how to apply, please visit iEARN-USA's website.

School 2 School Fellowship Program
> posted by request:
As part of the America's Unofficial Ambassadors initiative, the School-2-School program advances goals related to education and mutual understanding at the grassroots level in the United States and in the Muslim World. S2S has benefitted thousands of students and their teachers since 2005 in countries ranging from Afghanistan and Bangladesh to Indonesia and the United States. Through S2S, lead teachers from the American school and their partner school in the Muslim World design and implement a plan for their classrooms to engage with and learn from each other. At the same time, the American school raises money to purchase vital educational supplies requested by their partner school. In addition, an educator from the American school travels to the partner school over the summer to volunteer for two to four weeks, serving with the school's students or administration. The educator then serves as an ambassador, sharing the experience with his or her school and the wider local community.
The School 2 School fellowship program is seeking RPCV teachers to partner their classrooms with a school in the Muslim World and to volunteer there for two to four weeks this summer! Competitive program, application can be found here.
