While the standoff within the executive and legislative branches is behind lawmakers - at least for the moment - several matters pertaining to the Peace Corps and Peace Corps community are on the horizon, including confirmation of a new Peace Corps Director ... |

Investing in Peace, Investing in the NPCA: Wayne & Wanita Blumhorst It's often said that Peace Corps is a "transformative experience. What's not so well recognized is that it can also be a transformative experience for a Volunteer's family members. This is certainly true for Wayne and Wanita Blumhorst, new members of the National Peace Corps Association's (NPCA) Director's Circle.
Exposure to the Peace Corps through the service of their son, NPCA President Glenn Blumhorst (Guatemala 1988-91) and a visit to his site (their first trip overseas), set this couple on a path of global peace activism. Familial ties aside, they firmly believe that their investment in NPCA will provide a good "return on investment" in the cause of peace. |
Small Changes Can Make a Difference: Peace Corps Iran Assoc. For Negar Pourshadi and her family, their association with the Peace Corps Iran Association (an NPCA member group) took on special meaning this past summer.
As Negar talked about life in Iran during a panel discussion during Peace Corps Connect-Boston this past June, she mentioned her upcoming U.S. wedding. A graduate student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Negar was engaged to be married to an American colleague. However, she noted her parents would be unable to attend, as poor US-Iran relations made it too difficult for them to obtain visas. Learning of this misfortune, the dozens of Iran RPCVs attending the gathering sprang into action ...

Calling the 1980s and 1990s: Preserve Those Peace Corps Artifacts
There are thousands of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs) who have served during the 1980s and 1990s, yet these decades are scantily represented in the Peace Corps Community Archive, established in early 2013 at American University in Washington, D.C. The Archive, announced on March 21, marks an exciting chance for RPCVs who served in any country, at any time, to share their photos, letters, journals, videos, country newsletters, training materials and any other items directly relating to their Peace Corps service and experience. It joins several other institutions for RPCVs interested in preserving their memories or making donations of materials for posterity. To assist, NPCA has created a one-stop resource page on its website... |
