President To Nominate Hessler-Radelet as Next Peace Corps Director President Obama announced on Thursday his intention to nominate Carrie Hessler-Radelet (Samoa 1981-83) to become the 19th Director of the Peace Corps.
Hessler-Radelet has been leading the agency since September of 2012. She was nominated by the President to be deputy director under Aaron Williams and began serving in that role in June, 2010.
"As Deputy Director of the Peace Corps, Carrie has been instrumental in recruiting and training thousands of Peace Corps volunteers who work to promote social and economic development around the world," said the President in a written statement. "I'm delighted to nominate her as Director, so this program can continue to benefit from her vision and commitment." |

August Advocacy Meetings Will Bolster Peace Corps Funding Effort A House Appropriations Subcommittee is preparing Thursday to recommend an international affairs budget for Fiscal Year 2014 that recommends $356 million for the Peace Corps. This would be the same funding level for the agency in the aftermath of this year's across-the-board budget cutting "sequester", and would mark the lowest funding figure in five years.
The Senate is expected to recommend a higher Peace Corps funding level as early as next week.
Peace Corps funding will be one of the primary items of discussion next month as we are preparing members of our community to organize district meetings with their members of Congress. Please add your voice to this effort! Follow this link to see if meetings are being organized in your area. If they aren't, advocacy@peacecorpsconnect.org right now to help us organize. |
Wofford Award Winner Spreads Message of Peace Corps Impact "Action packed" would be one way to describe Dr. Mohamud Sheikh Nurein Said's most recent journey to the United States.
The 2013 recipient of the National Peace Corps Association's Harris Wofford Global Citizen Award, Dr. Said was invited to Peace Corps Connect - Boston to accept the prestigious honor. While the event itself only lasted two -- albeit eventful -- days, Dr. Said participated in a variety of exciting interviews, meetings, tours and receptions in the days leading up to and following the NPCA conference in Boston. At each stop, he shared the story of how his Peace Corps teachers set him on a path to a career in medicine and a lifelong passion for helping others
We have news stories, photos and more!
(Note: Nominations are now open for the 2014 Harris Wofford Global Citizen Award. Visit this link for nomination instructions and forms. All nominations due by Thursday, October 31, 2013.)

Meet Janine Kossen: RPCV Advocate As the Director of Public Policy at Advocates for Youth, Janine Kossen (Mauritania, 2003-05) is a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer (RPCV) with a lot of experience advocating for sexual and reproductive health policies, ranging from female genital cutting to family planning practices.
"I would never have been where I am today without the Peace Corps where I saw first-hand how restrictive national and international policies and funding requirements can actually lead to further public health challenges, such as child marriage and early (and poorly-spaced) pregnancies, as well as pervasive gender inequality, poverty, and malnutrition. These experiences helped influence and ground my current policy work and remind me why I continue to do what I do."
While accustomed to fighting for the rights of young women and girls facing these issues around the world, Janine never thought she would find herself needing to defend the rights of Peace Corps Volunteers (PCVs) as well. |
