Senate Passes Peace Corps Commemorative

The United States Senate gave unanimous approval Wednesday evening to legislation that would authorize the establishment of space near the National Mall to mark the historic significance of the founding of the Peace Corps in 1961, and the ideals Peace Corps service represents.

This bi-partisan effort was led by Senators Rob Portman (R-OH) and Mark Udall (D-CO). Please thank them!

The House of Representatives still needs to pass companion legislation in the House. The House bill (H.R. 915) was the first piece of legislation introduced by freshman Congressman Joseph Kennedy III, a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer who served in the Dominican Republic.

Let's make this happen!

Philip Lilienthal Wins 2013 Sargent Shriver Award

Each year the National Peace Corps Association awards the Sargent Shriver Award for Distinguished Humanitarian Service to a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer who continues to make a sustained and distinguished contribution, whether that be to humanitarian causes at home, abroad, or through innovative social entrepreneurial efforts to bring about significant, long term-change.

This year the award goes to: Philip Lilienthal (Ethiopia 1965-67), founder and president of Global Camps Africa, a nonprofit whose mission is to empower children for an AIDS-free tomorrow. These children are affected by many kinds of violence and have been affected by the HIV crisis in Soweto Township. Phil's 8-day camps and the follow-up biweekly sessions provide a way for the children to see hope for their future. The Sargent Shriver Award for Distinguished Humanitarian Service will be presented at NPCA's Peace Corps Connect - Boston, June 28-29 in Boston, MA.

2013 Ruppe Award Winners Announced

The purpose of the award is not only to recognize the great work that NPCA's groups are doing, but also to generate ideas that other groups may emulate in their communities.

Peace Corps Announces Healthcare Feedback Mechanisms for PCVs, RPCVs

As supporters of the National Peace Corps Association know, we have been collaborating with a group of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers suffering post-service medical issues to help get their needs addressed by the Peace Corps.

Here's a recap and an important update from the Peace Corps...

Why I Give: Frank Yates Was There at the Founding

He founded the San Diego RPCV group. He's been a member of Central MO RPCVs in Columbia, MO, and has attended every annual meeting from 1982 to 1995.
Oh, yes. And he was there at the founding of the National Peace Corps Association

Frank Yates had been a steady financial contributor to NPCA for years, but, knowing there would be serious expenses for the NPCA for the 50
th anniversary of the Peace Corps, he made a big jump a few years ago. "I knew there would be a point in my life when I could start to contribute at the Director's Circle level.  The 50th seemed the right time to start and I have just kept it up.".

Big Reunions Planned for Honduras, Niger
The National Peace Corps Association loves to hear about Returned Peace Corps Volunteer (RPCV) reunions!

Unfortunately, we often receive word of the get-togethers a little too late to be of assistance -- many are "off the grid" and not connected in any way to NPCA or even to our member groups. From our perspective, this is a missed opportunity,  because reunions are an occasion for tracking down "missing" members of our community -- which we think is important.

Two RPCV groups, though -- Niger and Honduras -- have upcoming reunions that are sure to be a blast! By letting the NPCA know about their reunions early, they are spreading the word to members across the nation and getting more RPCVs involved in the good friends and fun activities that are sure to come!
