17 Senators Co-Sponsor Peace Corps Equity Act

A growing number of United States Senators are co-sponsoring Senate Bill 813, legislation introduced by Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) which would provide equitable treatment for Peace Corps Volunteers regarding abortion services in the rare cases of rape, incest, or life endangerment to the woman.

Female volunteers stand alone as the only individuals serving our nation overseas who are forced to pay for this service (in these limited situations) should it arise.

That's not fair. It's time to change that.  It starts with your Senators.

Did you know that Sargent Shriver, the dynamic force behind the creation of the Peace Corps, was also a pioneer behind the creation of Ashoka? Or that Volunteers have trained Ashoka Fellows (the world's leading social entrepreneurs) as they began their careers (Gambia Fellow Badara Jobe)?  Volunteers have also become Ashoka Fellows themselves after building upon their changemaking experiences in the Peace Corps (Guatemala Fellow Greg Van Kirk).  In fact, there are many powerful stories of intersection between the Ashoka and Peace Corps communities and as a Volunteer we want YOU to join Ashoka's Everyone a Changemaker movement.

Why Peace Corps Matters - Nashville
The Peace Corps Difference

You may recall a 2011 survey of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs) which found that we volunteer at slightly more than twice the national average, and that approximately two-thirds of respondents report working in the non-profit or education sectors.

The ongoing commitment to service and bringing the world home was on display during NPCA's recent cross-country trip.  During the trip we launched "The Peace Corps Difference," a whiteboard testament to the spirit and contributions of the Peace Corps community.  Find out more and send us your photo!

Helene Dudley Receives 2013 Lillian Carter Award
Congratulations to Helene Dudley (Colombia 1968-60, Slovakia 1997-99), former NPCA board member and past President of the Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of South Florida who accepted the 2013 Lillian Carter Award on Wednesday in Atlanta, Ga.
The award is named after the late Lillian Carter (India 1966-68), who ented the Peace Corps at the age of 68. It is given biennially to an exceptional Returned Peace Corps Volunteer who has "served in Peace Corps as a senior (age 50+) and shown a demonstrated commitment to the Peace Corps' Third Goal: to help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans."
