National Peace Corps Association Welcomes New President
The NPCA board of directors and staff is pleased to welcome Glenn Blumhorst (RPCV Guatemala, 1988-1991) as the organization's next President.
Glenn brings to the role more than 25 years of professional experience in the international development arena, with a strong background in donor development, program management and corporate representation. In addition to his three-year PCV service in Guatemala, he has served in long- and short-term assignments in more than 25 countries as well as several years in Washington, DC.
"I'm both excited and humbled to serve as NPCA President," says Blumhorst. This opportunity brings me back full circle to the Peace Corps Community, whose mission I have embraced throughout my career. We have a promising future ahead and I look forward to being part of the team." |
Dr. Mohamud Sheikh Nurein Said Wins 2013 Harris Wofford Global Citizen Award A 40-year friendship that started with a high school student asking Peace Corps Volunteers what motivated them to volunteer has led to a lifetime of service and now to the 2013 Harris Wofford Global Citizen Award.
When notified by Skype that he was the winner of this year's award, Dr. Mohamud Sheikh Nurein Said of Kenya had this to say about the impact Peace Corps has had on his life and the importance he attached to the award:
My first encounter with a Peace Corps Volunteer was in I965 when I joined Marsabit Secondary School, Kenya. As a young boy, I wondered why these white people came to the remotest area in Kenya to assist us. Since then, I have been motivated by their spirit of volunteerism, and I never looked back....

Travelers Exploring the Dominican Republic with Next Step Travel
NPCA board member Kate Schachter (Ghana 2004-07) is the currently in the Dominican Republic, serving as the NPCA host on our latest Next Step Travel service learning trip. According to her, it's like all the best parts of Peace Corps training.
"The promise of 'service travel' was so well done in the Discover Corps connection with NPCA,' reports Kate, "that the non-RPCVs thought they were joining a mini-version of a live Peace Corps experience. And that is as it should be." Read her latest trip report here.
Intrigued? Check out all the photos we've posted to Facebook and read first hand trip reports on our Service blog. We have three more trips planned this year to the Dominican Republic and four more to Guatemala.

Tattoo Tuesday on our Facebook Page
Peace Corps is an intensely personal, transformative experience, so it's understandable that some Peace Corps Volunteers and Returned Peace Corps Volunteers choose body art as one way to share their story. We've created a photo album on our Facebook Page to showcase tattoos that RPCVs and PCVs have gotten to commemorate their Peace Corps service. Have that one you'd like included here? Email a photo and the back story (pun intended!) to news@peacecorpsconnect.org with the word "Tattoo" in the subject line. We'll upload them on Tuesdays.

Why We Give to NPCA: Peace Corps Changed Our LIves
Why do Jack and Angene Wilson, members of the National Peace Corps Association Director's Circle, support the National Peace Corps Association?
Their answer is simple: the Peace Corps changed their lives -- the NPCA "is critical" to helping carry out the Third Goal.
From involvement in multiple country of service groups and their geographic group, Kentucky RPCVs, to writing lesson plans for WorldView and participating in NPCA Advocacy efforts, the Wilsons are active supporters and members of NPCA.
