NPCA Global Education Newsletter - Spring 2013
This has been a busy winter here at NPCA, but without the snow. I hope our readers have not been adversely affected by our recent storms. With this email, we are back on track with our monthly updates!
We are accepting articles now for the Spring issue of Global Education News. Please let editor Susan Neyer ( susanneyer@astound.net) know to expect your article and save some space, then get the text and any photos in by February 25.
Sometimes items in the news will spark a classroom discussion - or leave you struggling to figure out how to approach a topic.
Whatever the approach, this network of educators in NPCA Global Education is here to help.
We welcome writers for our newsletters (see below and then download the Winter 2012-2013 issue from the website), be they classroom teachers, students, Peace Corps Volunteers, parents, etc.
Any and all topics welcomed, but in case you are looking for some ideas, we've received requests for the following:
- Did Hurricane Sandy, winter storm Nemo or other extreme weather (re)start any conversation around climate change?
- How are you connecting your students/kids to people in the rest of the world? We are looking for some innovative connections, particularly those that go beyond linking through Peace Corps Volunteers.
Thank you for all that you do to bring the world into classrooms and communities. Please share your stories, lesson plans and resources with us so that we can share them with all of you!
Peace,

Anne Baker Acting President National Peace Corps Association
ps - Or if you are looking to get away from the snow, the most recent issue of WorldView magazine highlights travel, in particular NPCA's new program, Next Step Travel, featured in the column on the right. |

Interactive Human Rights Education Tool for Youth
> From the Global Human Rights Education listserv:
I would like to share with you an innovative digital tool launched by Amnesty International that can support your organization's valuable work to advance human rights. RespectMyRights is an online platform that aims to engage and inspire young people between the ages of 15-22 to learn about and take action against human rights violations and abuses that deepen and drive poverty. Users can access two interactive learning journeys: - The Poverty Trap asks young people to make choices from the perspective of someone living in poverty, helping them realize that human rights are vital to breaking the cycle of poverty.
- The Housing Journey explores what it means to live in adequate housing.
As a valuable new resource for the human rights community, www.respectmyrights.org encourages a process of collective, participatory online learning. We hope you will be as excited as we are to start using this innovative tool to complement your work and would love it if you would share it widely - with your network, on your website, or via your organization's newsletter. The platform has been developed by the International Human Rights Education Team, with the support of Demand Dignity, youth and digital communications teams at Amnesty International and also in conjunction with Amnesty offices in Poland, Italy and Slovenia as part of the Education for Human Dignity Project, co-funded by the European Commission. It is available in six languages: English, French, Spanish, Polish, Slovenian and Italian. |

Nepal Teacher Training Innovation
Revolutionizing Education in Nepal and Empowering Women and Girls
> Posted by request:
Nepal Teacher Training Innovations (NTTI) is revolutionizing the standard of education in some of Nepal's most remote, resource-poor schools. Its teacher training focuses on the use of critical and creative thinking skills in the classroom to meet the needs of today's learners, especially girls. Its Training of Trainers (TOT) and Mentorship program help teachers, especially talented female teachers, become leaders and agents of change in their schools and communities.
NTTI has a particular emphasis on motivating girls to stay in school as only 20% of girls in rural public schools graduate from high school. We provide Girls' Sensitivity Trainings to make teacher more aware of the unique needs of female students and we conduct Girls' Empowerment Workshops to raise the awareness of village girls about health, safety, and the importance of staying in school.
Since 2010, NTTI has trained more than 1000 teachers from ten districts across Nepal. Because each teacher typically works with 80 students over the year, our program has reached more than 80,000 students including more than 48,000 girls.
If you would like to learn more about the project, please visit www.nepaltti.org or contact Ashley Hager, NTTI Project Director at ahager@ntti.org
