Start the New Academic Year with Global Education

For many educators and students here in the U.S., this is back-to-school week.  I hope you had a relaxing summer and you are ready for a great year of global education.  I've got a couple of things to share with you today to help you get your academic year off to a good start.
  • Expos:  Our first two Third Goal Expos - focused on global education - were a big hit. There are two coming up next month.  Plan to attend one of these free events for resources and stories you can bring into your classroom.  See below for details or visit our website.
  • Teaching about Peace:  Angene Wilson wrote an open letter in our summer newsletter on "What and How Do We Teach About Peace."  She invites you to share what you plan to do in your classroom.  Share your ideas with her, then look for her compiled responses in a future newsletter.
  • Newsletter:  Speaking of the newsletter, do you have stories to share, resources to review, favorite lesson plans or tips for the classroom? How about ideas for teaching about food security for World Food Day (October 16), mitigating extreme weather, or tolerance of different cultures and religions? Please contact our editor, Susan Neyer at susanneyer@astound.net by September 10 for the fall issue.

Thank you for all that you do to bring the world into classrooms and communities.

Peace,

Peace Corps Third Goal Expos Focus on Global Education

NPCA and Peace Corps are kicking off the next 50 years of Peace Corps by focusing on the "third goal" of Peace Corps:  bringing the world back home.  One way we are doing this is through a series of four Third Goal Expos - events open to the Peace Corps community and the general public, but with a special focus on resources for educators.  These expos will showcase the countries and cultures where Peace Corps Volunteers have served and highlight Volunteers' experiences and projects.  The Expos will feature Peace Corps' Speakers Match, Correspondence Match, and Coverdell World Wise Schools programs and showcase ways that educators and returned Volunteers can share Peace Corps experiences in classrooms and communities.

These are a great - and fun! - way to start out your academic year! You'll find the complete program and link to register (for free!) from these links.

All expos are free and open to the public.  We may still have some room for exhibitors, so if you are interested, please contact Anne Baker at anne@peacecorpsconnect.org.  See you there!

New Video Resource for Integrating "Finding Solutions to Hunger" in the K-12 Classroom

> From the press release:

Kids Can Make A Difference, a project of iEARN (International Education and Resource Network), the leader in online collaborative project-based learning, announced a new video designed to help K-12 educators integrate the resources within the "Finding Solutions to Hunger" Teacher Guide.  Narrated by Stephanie Kempf, the author of the Teachers Guide, the video offers concrete suggestions on how to introduce lessons on the nature of hunger, food distribution patterns and root causes of hunger in the US and around the world.

Educators can view this new video and engage their students with classes around the world on the root causes of hunger by participating in the "Finding Solutions To Hunger" project in iEARN.

Volunteers Needed for Curriculum Development Project

> Posted by request:

The Peace Corps Nigeria Alumni Foundation is committed to serving as a catalyst for enhancing public awareness in the U.S. about the critical need to improve equity and access to quality education for children in Nigeria. A key component of our mission is providing support to teachers interested in using the crisis in Nigeria as a vehicle for helping their students understand what global interdependence really means, and instill in them a sense of global responsibility.

We are currently seeking teachers to collaborate with us to develop and test an instructional unit focusing on the theme of global interdependence and the need to improve equity and access to basic education for children in developing countries. This new unit would be specifically designed to help students examine the economic, political, social and ecological ties that bind this country to the Third World.
