Creating lifelong Jewish connections, one happy camper at a time.
October, 2015
A Note from Rabbi Joel Seltzer, Executive Director

Shanah Tovah! It is hard to believe that it has been over a month since we said goodbye to summer 2016. As we all get back to school, work, and life, we hope that the many warm memories of another fabulous summer at our camps still affords your family with great stories, incredible relationships, and lots of belly laughs.
This Rosh HaShanah, as I like to do, I thought about the year that was, its successes, its challenges, and its blessings. One thing I like to ask myself is what are my personal goals for this coming year. Now, it may sound a bit strange to hear me say this, but one of my goals for this upcoming year was to learn more Torah! Seriously! More than just going to shul, more than just a Shabbat dinner with family and friends, I thought about how easy and effortless it can be to experience serious Torah study up at camp, but due to our over-programmed lives at home, how difficult that simple goal can be to achieve during the year.
I am therefore happy to announce a second year of partnership between Camp Ramah in the Poconos and Beth Zion-Beth Israel of Philadelphia, in putting together a stellar line-up of rabbis and educators for the 2nd Annual Center City Community Beit Midrash. Beginning on Monday night, October 19th and continuing on Monday nights through December 14th, we will present a series of classes entitled:

A Tour of Great Jewish Thinkers: Take a journey with eight distinguished rabbis and educators as they explore a Jewish thinker whose religious philosophy and writings have influenced them.
I am pleased to be joining my friends and colleagues: Rabbi Abe Friedman (BZBI), Rabbi Ariella Rosen (Adath Israel), Rabbi Micah Peltz (Temple Beth Sholom, Cherry Hill), Rabbi Uri Allen (Har Zion), Rabbi Andrea Merow (Beth Sholom Congregation, Elkins Park), Judy Groner (Perelman Jewish Day School), and Rabbi Yosef Goldman (BZBI), as a facilitator for this course.
Come out and show your support for Ramah and for the endeavor of serious Torah Study during the year. (Hey parents - this is a great course to enjoy alongside your teenager!)
Registration is available on the BZBI website:

Over $60,000 Raised for our Tikvah Programs
Thank you to our riders and donors!

Todah rabbah, thank you to the Forman family who generously sponsored this year's Forman Mills Tour de Shuls on September 20th at Temple Sinai in Dresher, which raised over $60,000 for our Tikvah programs!
Our Tikvah story began in 2009 with the creation of Tikvah Family Camp, providing Jewish children with developmental disabilities and/or social learning disorders, their parents, and their siblings the unique opportunity to experience the magic of Jewish summer camp together. Today we have a Tikvah program at  Ramah Day Camp and, at Camp Ramah in the Poconos, we've broken ground for our first Tikvah bunk!
A hearty yasher koach goes to alumni Matt Tanzer, Forman Mills Tour de Shuls event organizer, along with Michal Wachs, the ride captain, who doubled the amount of groups this year to an amazing 22 teams with over 250 riders. Camp Ramah in the Poconos parent and grandparent, Len Abrams, helped pave the way as part of the joint effort of the Men's Clubs of the Mid-Atlantic Region who assisted in making the day a great success. Bruce Fagan, M.A.R. president, also deserves congratulations in enlisting sponsorships and the Men's Clubs participation.
Kol ha'kavod to all of the donors and riders for a job well done, especially our top five team fundraisers; the Flat Tires, who raised an amazing $7,373, Seltzer's Meltzars, Biker Tov, G2K7 Champs, and the Mt. Airy Mitzvah Riders.
Ramah is for everyone. For more information about any of our Tikvah programs including our new Tikvah edah at Camp Ramah in the Poconos, please contact
Directors' Meetings in Canada

Each year, at the close of the summer, the Ramah Directors gather together to share best practices, success stories, as well as challenges, from our respective summers. This year, the setting was Camp Ramah in Canada, located in the picturesque Muskoka region of Ontario.

News from Ramah Day Camp
A Note from Ramah Day Camp
By Eileen Graub, Assistant Director

The campus is quiet and camp has been packed up and stored until next summer. It is during these quiet days that the Ramah Day Camp staff can reflect upon the summer. After all of the hard work and dedication given to opening our summer season, it is hard to believe that it has already come to an end.

Over 90 staff members took care of our campers. From counselors to specialist to bus drivers, each one of them took special interest in your child. We are truly lucky to have such a dedicated tzevet (staff) with their total commitment to our campers having an outstanding Ramah summer!

Our first week included introduction and community building activities within the bunk and camp. Week two had us out on our first session trips, we all had a blast on our under nights and overnights. We broke Maccabiah during Week 3, and Lavan (white) and Cachol (blue) battled it out until Shabbat on Friday afternoon in our great Disney vs. Pixar theme.Week four we had over 30 campers participate in our UKElite Soccer Clinic, where our campers were able to improve their soccer and teambuilding skills. This was also the week that the chanichim (campers) studied Israel so that during week 6 they were ready for our Yom Yisrael program. Boarding the plane, landing in Israel and experiencing so many exciting aspects of our homeland is always a summer highlight.

Rick Recht joined us during week 5 to entertain and launch our 20th summer of Ramah Day Camp celebration. During week 7, we once again were able to go out on trips and enjoy under nights and overnights. Our final week brought the entire camp together to enjoy our performing arts festival, Anything Can Happen in a New York Minute. The campers stole the show with rousing songs and dances as well as wonderful acting from chanichim from Solelim, Arazim and Etgar. So quickly, camp came to a close as we enjoyed our last Kabbalat Shabbat together.

We are so proud of all that was accomplished this summer. We are taking time to celebrate our friendships, and the connections and strength of our Ramah Day Camp community. The memories made this summer will carry us through until we meet again for Kayitz 2016.
