FROM THE DIRECTOR......

Greetings!

Happy New Year!
I am looking forward to all that this new year will bring.  At Nursery School change and growth are a daily occurrence for the children and the adults.  I get great satisfaction from that.  I am excited about witnessing and supporting children, teachers, and families in growth in the coming months.
This is a time when the children really take a leap forward in development.  They are now familiar with school and what is available in the environment, they are comfortable with their peers, and the teachers have a good understanding of each child and their particular learning style and personality.  Because we use a negotiated curriculum, in which the teachers create learning opportunities based on the children's interests, we don't know exactly what projects will emerge, but we do know that it will be interesting, challenging, and fun.  This way of teaching requires a sophisticated understanding of child development in all areas-physical, intellectual, social and emotional. To keep up with new developments in early childhood learning theory the staff participate frequently in workshops and conferences.  This month a group of teachers and I will be going to Tucson to take part in a conference with other early childhood educators who are influenced by social constructivism and the Reggio Emilia approach to learning.  We will be sharing what we learn with everyone when we return.  It is a special opportunity; one that is made possible in part through generous funding from our annual Gala.
I want to remind you that I am always available to talk with you about any questions, concerns, or just sharing the joys and frustrations of parenting young children. Please feel free to stop by the office, call me or email me anytime.
Julie

We will be hosting our annual Kindergarten Readiness Night on Jan 15.  This is always a very informative evening, with speakers on the topic of social emotional readiness, and what children really need to know to be ready for kindergarten.  We have many area schools represented giving parents an opportunity for one stop shopping!  This event is open to the community so please invite your friends or acquaintances with pre-kindergarteners.
Kindergarten Readiness Night, Tuesday, Jan. 15th
Please join us for Kindergarten Readiness Night.
Tuesday, January 15th

Nursery School classrooms will be open
@ 6:30 p.m.
Meeting begins in Fellowship Hall @ 7:00 p.m

Come share in our discussion......
When should your child go to Kindergarten ?

What are the indicators of readiness ?
What are some typical adjustments to Kindergarten ?
How can parents help children to be ready ?
What are the choices if a child is not ready ?
How to make useful school observations and visits.

Even if Kindergarten seems far away, this is an opportunity to consider and discuss the future.  See how your child's current experience is providing the appropriate preparation.
Parent Education Mtg.  Thursday, 1/24
Noon - 1:30 p.m.

Please join us for another Brown Bag Lunch, Thursday January 24th from 12:00-1:30. We are lucky to have Tahirih Linz of SalmonBerry Consulting back again for a workshop that addresses the importance of fostering healthful food habits in our children, modeling healthful food habits as parents, and understanding the specifics of what children need and don't need in their diet.  The workshop will cover these topics:

  • Top 5 nutritional concepts to incorporate into your child's life.
  • Snack time on the go....how to make it healthy.  New, fresh ideas on what to put in your child's snack bag.
  • Everyone always wants to talk about sugar!  Not just sugary treats, but the hidden sugars in our everyday foods.

When: Thursday January 24th from 12:00-1:30

Where: La Jolla United Methodist Church Nursery School,

Wicker Room

Pricing: (The workshop is free)

Childcare: RSVP with Tina Wynn by Tuesday, 1/22

Bits and Pieces.....
Appreciations from Julie.......
Special Appreciation to all the families that helped take care of our chickens and duck over the break.  I heard there were some very amusing learning experiences on the best way to corral uncooperative chickens and lure a reluctant duck into his coop for the night.

Notecard Sale, did you miss our notecard sale just before the holidays ? If so, take a moment to stop by the NS office when you get back to school.  Notecards are on display on the counter in front of the Nursery School office.
Each one of our Nursery School classes contributed an original work of art to create a beautiful set of cards.  Each set is only $20 and all proceeds benefit the Nursery School.   Thank you for your support !!

Openings available @ LJUMCNS -
