Adopt a Golden Atlanta - Golden Gazette

February 2013
Message from the President

I can't believe it is February already. Cold days, hot days, rainy days. How can anyone dress their golden appropriately? Talking about dressing, the Golden Gala is only a few weeks away. It is the best party around and more importantly, it benefits abandoned golden retrievers. It is not fancy dress. We say "casual cocktail attire/ golden retriever hair welcomed" - that means use the evening to dress as you wish.... Cocktail or what you'd wear to a nice restaurant.  Guys don't have to wear ties but a jacket is requested and no jeans. It's not a sit down dinner but we have the best food from A Legendary Event, beer, wine and the best "Goldentinis" in town. A silent auction, a live auction run by a Manheim auctioneer and a special area where you can meet the artist and photographer of golden retrievers known worldwide, Debra Marlin. Her artwork and books will be for sale with proceeds going to AGA. And then, you can see photos of every dog we saved last year and see a video featuring some special goldens who experienced miracle transformations last year. It's a fun-filled evening and you will get to meet several of our Orphans 'up close and personal' should you be looking for a special dog to fill an empty place in your heart.

Please join us on Saturday, February 23rd by purchasing your tickets online today.

Dog Care Tip - Reverse Sneezing

Reverse sneezing is a common phenomenon in dogs. In a regular sneeze, a dog pushes air out through the nose; however, in a reverse sneeze, air is pulled in rapidly through the nose resulting in a very loud, very scary sounding event.

During a reverse sneeze, your dog will rapidly inhale air while standing still with elbows spread apart and head extended. In addition, your dog's eyes may appear to bulge. There will be loud snorting sounds, which might make you think he has something caught in his throat. Many dog owners think their pet is suffocating during a reverse sneeze episode.

Demonstration of a Reverse Sneeze
The exact reason for these reverse sneezing episodes is unknown, but may be related to allergies, nasal irritants or nasal inflammation. A reverse sneeze looks and sounds disturbing - many people fear that their dog is not breathing during these episodes and rush them to a vet - but it is not a harmful condition and there are no ill effects. Reverse sneezing attacks are generally quite brief and are not life threatening.

An episode can be stopped if the dog is stimulated to swallow by massaging the throat. Between episodes, the dog will behave normally.

AGA Looking For Loving Fosters
We are always looking to add to our "foster families" - these families provide a loving home for a golden for a minimum of 5 days. We will match a golden to your lifestyle! All you have to do is provide love, exercise and attention. If you and your family are interested in joining our foster team, check out our application online. Thanks!
