Are We Too Picky?
Sometimes we are told that our adoption process is much too thorough... and that we are too picky.
I remember when an applicant once said to me, "We are not trying to adopt a child - it's just a dog." Needless to say, that applicant didn't get the privilege of adopting one of our goldens.
Yes, I sincerely believe adopting an AGA dog is a privilege. I can assure you that if you are chosen for one of our dogs, you are special. Many of our dogs have not had a great life and it is our responsibility to put their needs first. We have to do everything in our power to find the perfect match because anything else would be so unfair to our goldens.
Pictured above is Teddy Bear, a ten year old who has spent his life as a breeder dog. He didn't have a mean breeder, but he didn't get to do the things your dogs get to do or my dogs get to do. He has never taken walks, or taken a swim or run on the beach or chased a tennis ball. He has no stamina or muscle development. Right now, he is resting. Finally, he has no worries. He has a wonderful foster family who may fall hopelessly in love with this guy and will always put his needs before theirs.
That's what makes our fosters special and what makes our adopters special. Go to our orphans page and look at those faces and tell me you don't agree they are not "just dogs" - they are so much more and deserve the best we can give them.
When I saw the sea of goldens at Goldenrama two weeks ago, I was reminded why this breed is so special and why rescued goldens are the most special of all. I hope you'll understand why my motto will always be "only special people need apply."

| November Orphan of the Month | |
Meet Honey Bun, our November Orphan of the Month! She's a nine year old golden girl who traveled all the way from Tennessee to get here. She has wonderful house manners and gets along great with other dogs and adores kids. She is not too fond of cats though and she is scared of storms and loud noises. She needs a quiet home with someone who wants a best friend to hang out with all the time. Honey Bun's favorite sports are swimming and chasing tennis balls! Come meet Honey Bun and our other Orphans at our next Adoption Day on November 4th! | |

HOW TO ADD TWO YEARS TO YOUR DOG'S LIFE
|
We all want our dogs to live forever and there are many things we can do to preserve and enhance their health. At the top of the list is maintaining a proper body weight - sadly, it is the one thing most often ignored. 54% of dogs in the US are obese, defined as 20% over their ideal weight.
For an average Golden Retriever who should weigh 70 lbs, if he weighs in at 84 pounds, he is obese. Dogs who maintain an ideal weight live 1.8 years longer than their overweight litter mates. That's almost 2 EXTRA years just for keeping your dog trim and slim.
How to tell if your dog is overweight:
1. Look at the dog's ribs. When you feel for the ribs, you should be able to feel each individual rib, with a thin layer of fat over the bone. If you cannot feel any ribs at all, the dog is too heavy.
2. Check the dog's back near the base of the tail. There will be a little fat covering the area. If you are unable to locate any bones while feeling the area, the dog is too heavy.
3. Look at the dog from above. There should be a noticeable taper at the base of the ribs that widens at the hips. The dog should have an "hourglass figure."
You can add 2 years to your dog's life! Go check your dog now! If you find you do indeed have a chubby dog, please contact AGA for advice on the "AGA Biggest Loser Diet Plan."
