Open Sesame!
Passwords -- you can't live without them but often you hate living with them, not to mention trying to remember them. Nonetheless, they are very important. Mashable recently ran an article with information from the password management firm SplashData. They released their annual list of the worst passwords of the year. SplashData gets its information by analyzing the 3 million passwords leaked on-line last year. The top ten worst passwords are: 123456; password; 12345; 12345678; qwerty; 234567890; 1234; baseball; dragon; and football. (Visit the Mashable link to see the full list and find out more about SplashData.)

The good news is that these passwords actually represent only a small percentage of the passwords that are used. People are learning that it's important to use better, stronger passwords. And, hard as it is to remember them all, to use different passwords for different accounts.

Start the New Year Happy
You've seen my reviews of books about being happy (Nov. 2013 and March 2014). I'm still keeping my happiness/gratitude journal (just started a new book -- with Holly Golightly aka Audrey Hepburn on the cover). I found another source for happiness -- Nataly Kogan and the Happier website ("my name is Nataly, and I'm the co-founder and CEO of Happier. But my favorite title is actually Chief Happiness Officer.") There are fun things to read, courses you can take, e-mails you can sign up for (daily "happy" quotes), and things you can buy. Back in December I bought the "happier favorites box". Because of the tumult of the end of the year, I've only just started exploring the box. What fun! There's an orange leather silver bead wrap bracelet; happier journal; Teaforte single steeps collection; Flourish by Martin Seligman; "Don't Change, You're Beautiful" change purse; Paddywax pomegranate & currant mini-tin candle; Vosge's 3 mini-bar chocolate library (mini exotic candy bar trio); and few other fun things including a big orange tote bag.  You can read more about Nataly, Happier, and the favorites box on the website (a portion of the proceeds from the box go to a wonderful charity that helps teachers in high-needs communities.

Be Happy!!
The Woman's Advantage
Another person I've been following recently is Mary Cantando of the Woman's Advantage. I receive her weekly Growth Tips e-mail with good advice on dealing with business. In addition, through NJAWBO, I answered an e-mail last summer to supply a quote for Mary's The Woman's Advantage 2015 Shared Wisdom Calendar -- and I was picked to be included! It's a page-a-day calendar with "shared wisdom" from many different women. I happen to have a few copies left. If you would like one, send me an e-mail -- I'll randomly choose two people (even though January is over, there's still lots of wisdom left). And be sure to check out October 16 to see what I shared (as that's my dad's birthday, I thought it very appropriate to be my day).

Book of the Month ... How to Be a Presentation God

Author Scott Schwertly, CEO of Ethos3, starts the book "French writer and Nobel Prize winner Andre Gide once said, 'Society knows perfectly how to kill a man and has methods more subtle than death.' Subtlety, thy name is PowerPoint."

Ethos3 is a leader in presentation design and training (you need to visit their website, the About Ethos3 page is a delight!) The book, subtitled Build, Design, and Deliver Presentations that Dominate!, explains how to tame the PowerPoint beast and indeed be a Presentation God. It includes sections on Content, Design, Delivery, and Engage.

I'm looking forward to not only learning from Scott how to improve my presentations, but also imparting this knowledge to my students. Perhaps this semester's final presentations will not just inform but will also wow.
