Where Did the Summer Go?
Well, this was the August newsletter. Now it's the Aug./Sept. newsletter. Below is what I started writing just before Labor Day:

Having spent last week at the Jersey Shore, I have been trying to extend my summer as long as possible. This past Tuesday, I did start teaching again, though. As I put it -- it was the first day in over a week that I was wearing my wristwatch and what passes for "grown-up" clothes. Public schools in this area are starting again next week (in other parts of the country, kids have been back at school for several weeks).

The real shock is that several of the vacant stores on the highway are already setting up as Halloween costume shops. And it's still August!!! I suppose the Christmas displays will be up the moment the back-to-school supplies displays are packed up.

I hope your summer was fun, relaxing, and rejuvenating. Based on the calendar, we have almost another month of summer to enjoy (and the weather does seem to be paying attention -- warm and humid is still here). As I often mention, for me the "end of summer" coincides with the Jewish New Year, which this year occurs at the much more reasonable end of September. So as much as possible, I will continue on "island" time and enjoy Summer.

I hope you've been enjoying a smooth transition from Summer to Fall.

September is a Special Month for Children
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month. It is a month we wish we wouldn't have to commemorate. Unfortunately childhood cancer is all too common (although it's officially considered rare). And the treatment methods for children are the same as for adults -- even though children's bodies aren't the same. Only a fraction of research money goes to childhood cancer research. This needs to change. Our children are our future -- they need more resources, more funding, and more research!

Some of you know I've been participating in a virtual Run to the White House (we post our miles for running, walking, biking, working out, etc., on Face Book -- the goal is to reach a total of one million miles). The "run" culminates this weekend with Curefest DC. On Saturday evening we will actually meet at the White House, with our flash lights and gold cellophane, so we can "Light the White House Gold". Sunday morning features a walk followed by speakers, entertainment, and booths. Along with my daughter, I will be helping at the Team Smashing Walnuts booth. This team is in memory of family friend Gabriella Miller, who died almost a year ago, at age 10, of a brain tumor -- the size of a walnut.

I am not only walking/helping because of Gabriella and other children I've "met" on-line. I lost my only first cousins to childhood cancer -- Frances, who I never knew, died when she was 10 years old from a brain tumor; her brother Charles died when he was a junior in college from acute leukemia.

Book of the Month ... Summer Reading, Part 2

So, did you read a lot this summer? Found any good books you'd like to share?

Here's a quick update on the books that were in my beach bag. The Good, The Bad, & The Emus by Donna Andrews was, as expected, delightful! Can't wait for the holiday book that will be out in November or December. The three mysteries by Rabbi Joseph Telushkin were good -- nice mix of mystery and Judaism.

Always by Amy Bloom started off well but then I just found it weird and I haven't finished it. I did pick up another book to read -- Exodus by Leon Uris (my daughter's reaction was "you haven't read it yet?!?" I'm part way through -- it's fascinating but also a bit overwhelming. I needed to take a break from it but will pick it up again when we do some traveling this fall and I need something to read on the plane.

There are a few business books beckoning me. Hopefully I'll have read one before my next eLetter comes out so I can report on it.
