Keeping Your Cellphone Charged

I love my cellphone, really I do. I'm not sure I love its battery. Some days it still has a charge when I'm ready to turn it off for the night. And some days by lunch time it's as hungry for a charge as I am for lunch.

Mashable recently posted an article called "5 Phone Charging Myths, Debunked", written by Yohana Desta. I'll summarized what was said, but read the article for the full story.
  1. Using off-brand chargers destroys batteries. Although they may not charge as quickly as official chargers, they work fine. It's knockoffs that barely work or can be harmful.
  2. You shouldn't use your phone while it charges. Unless you're using "a sketchy third-party charger", you can use the phone while it's charging without it exploding or you getting electrocuted.
  3. Charging your phone overnight kills the battery. Today's batteries are actually smart and know to stop charging when they're full.
  4. You don't need to turn your  phone off--ever. Actually, turning your phone off every now and then helps to preserve battery life. [I turn my phone off every night and let it recharge for the next day. I don't want to hear e-mails, texts, or anything else coming in overnight.]
  5. Don't charge your phone until it's completely dead. Today's lithium-ion batteries do better and last longer when they're not fully drained.
  6. BONUS: Fact--heat will ruin a battery. Also cold -- see my previous article about using your phone when it's really cold outside.

Who is That E-mail From?

You are scanning the list of e-mails that recently arrived in your in-box. Some of the "From" names you recognize, some list businesses or organization names that you recognize. But some are from names you don't recognize. Your finger hovers over the delete button . . . maybe before you hit it you glance at the subject line and realize it's from a company or organization you know, so you open it. But sometimes neither the name nor the subject line mean anything to you and you delete the e-mail without reading it.

There is no doubt who my eletter is from -- the "From" says "Nancy Passow/Write for You in NJ". So either you recognize my name or the name of my business, or both. But I keep getting e-mails from organizations (and businesses) that I support with either names I don't recognize or, worse yet, the first part of the e-mail address (e.g., "info"). Sometimes, I will click on the e-mail and find it is someone I'm interested in. Often, though, it just sits there "until I have time", which usually doesn't happen and it gets deleted. From now on, when I get those e-mails, I'm planning to respond and suggest they revise the "From" to include who they represent.

Join me in my campaign to improve e-mails -- let people know they need to identify who they are.

Book of the Month ... Summer Reading

It's that time of year to ask "What's in your beach bag?" Last month I asked for suggestions. So here's a list of books I have read, books I hope to read, and books suggested by friends.

Nancy's List:
The Good, the Bad, & the Emus: A Meg Lanslow Mystery by Donna Andrews (the latest by one of my favorite authors, due out July 8)

Rabbi Joseph Telushkin has written many books about Judaism (one of which I'll talk about next month). But he also wrote three mystery stories involving a Rabbi, Judaic principles, and even some romance:
The Unorthodox Murder of Rabbi Wahl; The Final Analysis of Dr. Stark; An Eye for an Eye

Always by Amy Bloom (new to me, she's an acclaimed storyteller)

From Sheryl Santi Luks (Santi Express):
The Light Between the Oceans by M. L. Stedman (Sad by very good.)

From Suzanne Engels (WebArtNTech):

Dreaming in Cuban by Cristina García (Banned by the Arizona school system, for me a recommendation.)

House On Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros (Great read, her first book.)

A Painted House by John Grisham (A bit lighter read, outside of his lawyerly genre; he's such a great storyteller and this is a wonderful story.)

The Art Forger by B.A.Shapiro (My book club had fun reading this, a fictional story revolving around the art theft from the Gardner Museum in Boston.)

Sutton by J.R. Moehringer (an intriguing bestseller that really does "steal your heart" [O. Oprah Magazine quote].)

And where can you get the books for your beach bag? I recently joined Paperback Swap -- a place where you can trade books for free. I've gotten rid of paperbacks gathering dust and found books I've been looking for. (And if you put me as a referral, I think I get some extra credits.)
