The Winter that Never Ends
It is the end of February. Yay! However, it's going to get very cold, again, for the next day or two (I can hear the wind blowing). It might snow on Monday (my husband just wandered past and said one model says 8 inches). Is the winter never going to end? This was the view down our sidewalk after the last major snowfall. {sigh} There's about a foot less now, but there's still a lot of snow. I am so ready for spring.

On-line friends from around the country have been posting photos of daffodils coming up -- I'm not expecting to see my yard for several weeks. There is good news however. Last spring our reservoirs were low. Even after it rained, the ground was very dry. It was not a good garden season. This year our reservoirs will be full from the snow melt. The ground should be nice and moist. Our kayak and canoe club will be able to run the spring trips in rivers that are flowing (last year the trips were canceled).

So hang in there -- try to find some happy thoughts and it really will be spring soon.
Some Good Thoughts for Bad Days
When my children were growing up, one of the highlights of the day was watching Mr. Rogers (something I enjoyed too). No matter how crazy things were, you could always count on feeling happier and calmer after visiting with Mr. Rogers and his neighbors.

Annie Colbert, in a Mashable column, shares 10 Mr. Rogers Quotes to remember on a bad day:
  1. "Who you are inside is what helps you make and do everything in life."
  2. "Little by little we human beings are confronted with situations that give us more and more clues that we aren't perfect."
  3. "Discovering the truth about ourselves is a lifetime's work, but it's worth the effort."
  4. "To love someone is to strive to accept that person exactly the way he or she is, right here and now."
  5. "Your rarely have the time for everything you want in this life, so you need to make choices. And hopefully your choices can come from a deep sense of who you are."
  6. "There is no normal life that is free of pain. It's the very wrestling with our problems that can be the impetus for our growth."
  7. "The world needs a sense of worth, and it will achieve it only by its people feeling they are worthwhile."
  8. "There are three ways to ultimate success: The first way is to be kind. The second way is to be kind. The third way is to be kind."
  9. "Often when you think you're at the end of something, you're at the beginning of something else."
  10. "The real issue in life is not how many blessings we have, but what we do with our blessings. Some people have many blessings and hoard them. Some have few and give everything away."

How to Be a Friend to a Friend Who's Sick

Confession time -- I am not good at what to say when someone is sick; I never know what to do or say when I visit someone in the hospital. And, unfortunately, this has been a year of friends and family who have been dealing with health issues. So, when I saw an article about Letty Cottin Pogrebin's new book, I immediately went to the Barnes & Noble site and ordered it.

Ms. Pogrebin is someone I've admired for years (I was a charter subscriber to Ms. Magazine.) Her initial inspiration for this book was her own bout with breast cancer. In addition to her experiences, she spoke with many others to get a sense of what works and what doesn't. She alternates chapters between advice and "interludes" where she describes her own experiences.

The preface of the book, titled "Who Am I and Why this Book" starts off: "I'm not a doctor, social worker, psychologist, religious leader, or grief counselor -- so who am I to write this book? Very simply, I'm someone who has -- whoops, who had -- cancer. I'm also a woman with lots of friends and a writer who became fascinated by the disconnect between how people treat sick people and how sick people wish to be treated." Ms. Pogrebin goes on to say, "Here's what you're going to learn in these pages, empathy translated into action equals kindness. It's a foolproof formula . . . "
