Book of the Month . . .
Putting Joy in Your Life
Last month I wrote about gratitude and how happy I was that there was no exciting weather in October. You will see that the Book of the Month is about happiness. Last week I went to an adult ed class at my synagogue called "Putting Joy in Your Life". (The lovely symbol above was purchased at Target to bring to that class.) This is obviously all leading somewhere.

I have been working at putting more joy in my life. Our Rabbi strongly recommends a gratitude journal. Every day you write down three things you are grateful for. Or three things that made you happy. I finally started my journal while we were on a long weekend in Seattle at the beginning of the month. I bought a beautiful journal with a photo of Chihuly glass on the front. I'm using my Diva pen. And I haven't missed a day this month. Some days I have more than three things, some days it's a little hard to find three things. I think about the key ring I bought in September. On one side it says "life is good" and on the other side it says "enjoy the little things". So sometimes my entry is just a pretty sunset or I got in and out of Shop Rite in 15 minutes at 5:30 pm. Sometimes it's more momentous, like spending time with long-time friends or unexpectedly running into a friend (Hi, Sandra!!)

Finding at least three things each day to be grateful for really does make a huge difference in your attitude. If nothing else, looking for happy things makes you smile. I wish you all more joy in your lives!
Happy Thanksgivukah to You!
Although the overlap of Chanukah and Thanksgiving will never happen again in our lifetimes, it's not really so strange to celebrate them together. Both holidays actually celebrate religious freedom and both holidays involve gratitude and saying thank you. The Jews (as usual) were being threatened by another group (this time the Greeks) who wanted to make them stop what they were doing and become Greek. Against great odds, the Jews won. This was an even bigger miracle than the oil lasting for eight days to light the menorah. The Pilgrims first celebrated Thanksgiving to say thank you for their new home and way of life. They fled Europe and settled in the New World in order to practice their religion without being persecuted. So we get to say a double thanks this year.

Thank you! Thank you for being my clients. Thank you for providing services, materials, and more for my business. Thank you for reading my newsletter (and especially thank you for telling me how much you like my news letter). Thank you for providing support, friendship, and joy in my life!! (And thank you for the fact that my holiday shopping is done!!)

Book of the Month . . The Happiness Advantage

Shawn Achor is an expert in a wonderful new field called positive psychology. It's based on focusing on the positive rather than the negative -- not just how to make someone not depressed but how to make that person happy.

In his book, subtitled "The Seven Principles of Positive Psychology That Fuel Success and Performance at Work", Shawn lets us on in a secret. Although we've always been told that if we're successful we'll be happy, it's actually the other way round. If we're happy, we will be successful. Shawn explains that he first discovered this while he was at Harvard, initially as an undergraduate and then as a graduate student and researcher. He helped to develop and present the wildly popular Happiness course.

The book is divided into three sections. Section one is an overview and introduction called Positive Psychology at Work. Section Two discusses the seven principles, which are: The Happiness Advantage; The Fulcrum and the Lever; The Tetris Effect; Falling Up; The Zorro Circle; The 20-Second Rule; and Social Investment. Section three is The Ripple Effect.

Shawn's writing style is light, informative, and easy to read. He has fun explaining his ideas to us and really wants to help make our lives better and happier.
