Welcome to the latest issue of Write for You News & Notes with some words of wisdom on writing, business, and life. Maybe this time it really is spring. Today, April 24, is Administrative Professional Day (aka Secretary's Day). If, like me, you are your own secretary -- take yourself to lunch!! If you'd like to share any books or favorite links with our readers, send us an email (in particular, I'm looking for non-business books to share in our annual "beach book" column in June). And remember -- on paper or on-line, when you need words that work for you, I can write for you! Nancy Passow

Websites on the Go
| This is a photo of my website on my mobile phone. I've seen worse, I've seen better. It is possible to navigate it. I imagine some people will view my website from their phones, but I would think more would look at it from their PC, laptop, or tablet. My services aren't ones you necessarily need while you're out and about. But what if you have a retail business? People might check your website while they're on the go to find directions or see if you have what they need to buy. Or you might have a service that people do want to check. Have you looked at your website from a mobile device? How does it look? How easy is it to navigate? There are a number of services out there that can help you "mobilize" your website. Check with your web designer. One company that I recently read about is bMobilized -- they help small and medium-sized businesses mobilize their websites. |
"Look for the Helpers"
|
This past week was very sad and very scary. It is still hard to believe what happened in Boston. By now, you've probably seen the beautiful quote from Mr. Rogers (someone my children grew up on): "When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.' To this day, especially in times of 'disaster,' I remember my mother's words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers - so many caring people in this world." My daughter Kate is a helper -- she's a critical care paramedic. In May, she will be participating, along with several of her EMS colleagues, in the East Coast route of the EMS Memorial Bike Ride. She is looking for help funding their trip -- click here. As she puts it: "Thought and prayers go out to the victims of the Boston Marathon Bombings, but particularly to the first responders who trained for those kind of events hoping never to use that training. One month from today we should be arriving in Maine to start our final prep for the ride. Now that the weather has been getting nice everyone has been getting out on the bike for some longer riding. It is not too late to lend a hand with some financial support.

On-line Marketing
| There are two good ways to market yourself on-line. The first is to use Constant Contact to stay in touch with clients, prospective clients, friends, and colleagues. Check what Constant Contact can do by clicking here and then get in touch with me so I can help you do it. A great way to have a web presence without the expense of a full-blown website is using LinkedIn. Known as the business or professional "Facebook", LinkedIn allows you to provide information about yourself, your business, and your services. It's not just for people looking for a job (although it's great for that). It's a way to network and show off your expertise. And what you post will come up in Google searches. Not sure how to use LinkedIn? Not happy with your profile? Let me help you. |

Book of the Month . . |
|
Almost three years ago, I wrote about
How to Wow by Frances Cole Jones. Why am I writing about it again? Well, now there are two books and . . .
At the NJAWBO 15th Annual Business Growth & Procurement Conference, I got to meet Frances and she autographed my books!! Oh my goodness -- she is amazing! She's even better in person than she is in her books and her books are great!
My description of
How to Wow in my past review was "The book covers everything from the message in your voice mail to making presentations in front of a large audience. Using fun and practical examples, Frances provides guidelines that will help you truly 'wow' everyone you encounter." The books are set up to be used as resources -- when you are facing a difficult situation, look up what to do.
So, buy the books, visit her website, and sign-up for Frances' eletter, "Wow of the Week".
