This Week's Village Wine Cellar Features
-
2010 Lo Nuevo, Sorbo A Sorbo, Garnacha, Calatayud, Spain, 90 pts., The Tasting Panel; $13.00: The 2010 Sorbo a Sorbo Garnacha displays intense aromas and flavors of ripe cherry, raspberry, and currant, with subtle balsamic and mineral notes that add pleasantly to the complexity. A fresh, accessible wine with lingering, bright fruit on the finish. Beautifully balanced, elegant and delicious.
-
2010 Layer Cake, Garnacha, Calatayud, Spain; $15.00: "Our new Layer Cake from Calatayud, Spain is a rich and powerful Garnacha, very layered aromatically with fresh red stone fruit, spice and a hint of leather and tobacco. On the palate, the wine shows intense dark fruit with a background of chocolate and coffee with a long creamy finish. This wine will definitely lead to more babies being born in the world".
-
2008 Marimar Estate, Pinot Noir, Dona Margarita Vineyard, Mas Cavalls, Sonoma Coast, 94 pts., Wine Enthusiast, Winery Retail; $44.00, Our Price is $36.00: This vintage displays deep, intense nose of black cherry and raspberry, a note of faded roses, and spicy sandalwood, clove and cinnamon in the background. On the palate it is silky and chewy, with great structure, bright acidity, and firm but supple tannins that promise a long life.
-
2006 Bodegas Palacio, Rioja Cosme Palacio Reserva, Spain, 91 pts., Wine Spectator; Was $30.00, Now $25.00: Smoky and dark, with aromas of salami, rubber, baking spices and prune. In the mouth, it's full of brightening acids while the flavors of blackberry, black cherry and coffee yield to raisin and burnt toast on the finish. Very nice Rioja but with a touch of excess ripeness and raisin character.
- 2010 Descendientes de J. Palacios, Bierzo Petalos, 91 pts., Top 100 Wine Spectator 2012; $25.00: Wonderfully floral version, with violets and other wildflowers mingling with cinnamon hearts, fresh cherry, blueberry yoghurt, Turkish delight and powdered sugar - highly inviting overall. The palate is mid-weight, suave though surprisingly structured, indeed one of the most structured Petalos' in my experience. The length and depth are excellent, especially for the money; outstanding value.
-
2005 Telmo Rodriguez, Matallana, Ribera del Duero, Spain, 94+ pts., Parker; Was $145.00, Now $99.00: "The 2005 Matallana was sourced from a biodynamically farmed vineyard with crushing done by foot. It was aged for 20 months in 50% new French oak. Purple in color, it has a brooding nose of pain grille, graphite, espresso, incense and a potpourri of black fruits, Youthful on the palate, it has plenty of ripe tannin that will require 5-7 years of cellaring. However, the wine has all the right stuff, and it is only a matter of time before my score will appear conservative."
-
2010 Klinker Brick, Syrah, Farrah, Lodi, 91 pts., Wine Spectator; $20.00: WINE SPECTATOR REVIEW: A big, rich, full-bodied and expressive mix of spicy, beefy flavors, this deeply fruited Syrah flirts with berry jam yet gains depth and sophistication. Drink now through 2022.
- 2009 Charles Smith, Syrah, Royal City, Columbia Valley, 98 pts., Wine Enthusiast; $150.00: "An Amaro-like mix of bitters and herbs; this is exceptionally dense and dark. The fruit is a grace note; the big flavors come from herb, earth, rock, barrel and more. Licorice, baking spices, smoke, black cherry, Bourbon barrel, and on it goes. Huge and dense and seemingly endless."
- 2010 Kongsgaard, Syrah, Hudson Vineyard, Napa Valley, 97 pts., Parker; $200.00 The 2010 Syrah Hudson Vineyard is a huge wine. It shows tons of depth to the fruit in a dark, brooding style that is going to require some time in bottle before the wine is approachable. Whereas the 2009 is silky and feminine, the 2010 comes across as virile and muscular. Game, ash, licorice and a host of other varietal aromas and flavors emerge from this extroverted, impeccable wine.

Village Wine Cellar - Where we keep our entire store at a constant 64 degrees From Parker's Wine Buyers Guide No 7 by Robert M. Parker, Jr. is this quote from the introduction, How to Store Wine, page 9:
"If you can somehow get the temperature down to 65 degrees Farenheight or below, you will never have to worry about the condition of your wines."
Here at the Village Wine Cellar we proudly keep we proudly keep our ENTIRE store a constant "64 degrees temperature controlled," 365 days a year, hence Village Wine Cellar. This separates our store from all others as temperature is vital to the keeping wine from being spoiled. Proper storage is crucial to keeping the wine's integrity and quality from being compromised. As you are aware, all too often, someone has purchased a bottle of wine elsewhere only to find that their purchase is ruined due to the store temperature was too warm. This will never happen at Village Wine Cellar. |
