2009 Castellare Chianti Classico Riserva, Tuscany, 92 pts., Parker. Our price is $39.00 and get the second bottle for $1.00

"The 2009 Chianti Classico Riserva bursts from the palate with exotic dark fruit, flowers, mint and licorice, all of which come to life in a sumptuous, voluptuous style that is highly appealing. Layers of fruit build to the rich, creamy finish. This is another gorgeous wine from Castellare. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019.

I have long been a fan of Castellare. These are among my staples in Chianti Classico. As excellent as the wines often are, my impression is that quality and consistency have both increased in a big way over the last few years. This year's new releases include a special commemorative wine made to celebrate the estate's 30th vintage. While I am not usually a big fan of these "cellar blends," the Trenta Vendemmie is truly a special bottle well worth seeking out. Readers who want to learn more about Castellare and their flagship I Sodi di San Niccolo may want to check out my vertical on that wine, also published in this issue. Kudos to proprietors Paolo and Nicoletta Panerai, and their long-time winemaker Alessandro Cellai, on these spectacular wines."

This Week's Village Wine Cellar Features
  • 2010 Foley Estates, Pinot Noir, Sta. Rita Hills; $33.00: Rich, concentrated, dark, black fruit opens to aromas of sandal wood and toasty oak. The palate displays blueberries, blackberries and spicebox. This is a rich, fleshy wine held together with a solid backbone of silky tannins and firm natural acidity.
  • 2010 Pahlmeyer, Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast, 92 pts., Parker; $75.00: "Floral aromas and those of plum and black cherry come to the fore instantly, while darker forest floor and spice characteristics develop more slowly.  An intense and expressive Pinot with medium body, and pure focus through the finish."  - Kale Anderson, Director of Winemaking
  • 2010 Evening Land, Pinot Noir, Seven Springs La Source, Eola-Amity Hills, 95 pts., Wine Spectator, Highly Recommended; $65.00: Clear ruby red in color with purple tones; the elegant nose dances between red and black wild berry aromas. The nose has layers of fragrant floral and spice notes including rose, lavender, exotic anise, and cinnamon. Complex aromas that are tight and subdued and take a few moments in the glass to develop. The palate has a fine texture of soft tannins with purity of flavors. Bright cherry and a crushed rock character. The wine has wonderful balance and suppleness that sustain the elegant long finish.
  • 2008 Domaine Serene, Pinot Noir, Evenstad Reserve, Willamette Valley, 94 pts., Wine Enthusiast; $66.00: Winemaker's notes: The 2008 wines are reminiscent of the wonderful 2000 vintage; great purity of fruit and structure. Critics and fans alike agree that these wines may someday be counted as some of the best made in Oregon.
  • 2007 Darioush, Proprietary Red, Duel, Napa Valley, 91 pts., Parker; $55.00: Grown from two designated blocks on the Darioush estate in Napa Valley and Oak Knoll, Duel is the idyllic marriage of two distinguished varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. The finished wine offers unique attributes of both varietals; a rich chocolate core and earthy minerality is lent by Cabernet Sauvignon, while Shiraz reveals its inherent exotic spice and ripe red fruit. Approachable in its youth, Duel will continue to age superbly for several years.
  • 2009 Darioush, Cabernet Sauvignon, Signature, Napa Valley, 90 pts., Wine Spectator; $99.00: Inspired by the power and grace exhibited in the great wines of Bordeaux, Darioush's cooler-climate vineyards of southern Napa Valleyproduce wines with extraordinary depth, character and poise. The 2009 Signature Cabernet Sauvignon is influenced by higher portions of Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon from our Sage Vineyard atop Mt. Veeder.
  • 2009 Darioush, Cabernet Sauvignon, Darius II; $270.00: The Crown Jewel of the Darioush estate, Darius II Cabernet Sauvignon is hand-selected from several barrel lots that possess exquisite beauty and purity of character. Grown from our Southern Napa Valley and Mount Veeder estates, the benchmark of Darius II is its rich, regal style. Darius II is a deeply personal endeavor, produced on behalf of our most enthusiastic collectors and friends.
  • 2009 Achaval-Ferrer, Quimera, Mendoza, 93 pts., Parker; $49.00: "The 2009 Quimera is a blend of 40% Malbec, 22% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot with yields averaging a minuscule 1.3 tons per acre. The wine was aged in 40% new French oak. Pain grille, pencil lead, Asian spices, incense, violets, and assorted black fruits inform the nose of a complex, intense, layered, spicy, succulent wine with impeccable balance and length. Although it can be approached now, it will benefit from another 2-3 years of cellaring."
  • 2009 Achaval-Ferrer, Malbec, Finca Mirador, Mendoza, 96 pts., Parker; $115.00: "The 2009 Finca Mirador was sourced from vines planted in 1921 and yields of 0.9 tons per acre. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it sports a captivating nose of sandalwood, exotic spices, espresso, lavender, black cherry, and black raspberry. Layered on the palate with a velvety texture, it conceals enough structure to evolve for at least 3-4 years. This nicely proportioned effort will deliver prime drinking from 2015 to 2029."
  • 2009 Achaval-Ferrer, Malbec, Finca Bella Vista, Mendoza, 98 pts., Parker; $117.00: "The 2009 Finca Bella Vista was sourced from a vineyard planted in 1910 giving a miserly yield of 0.75 tons per acre. It displays slightly blacker fruit, a bit more depth and opulence, and a finish that seems endless. Give it 5-6 years of cellaring and enjoy it from 2016 to 2029+."
  • 2009 Achaval-Ferrer, Malbec, Finca Altamira, Mendoza, 99 pts., Parker; $120.00: "Even better is the brooding 2009 Finca Altamira sourced from vines over 80 years of age with yields of 0.75 tons per acre. Purple/black in color with a spectacular aromatic array of black fruits and spices that jump from the glass, this rich, opulent, beautifully proportioned Malbec sets the bar for what can be achieved with old vines, low yields, and craftsmanship in the cellar."

Village Wine Cellar - Where we keep our entire store at a constant 64 degrees

From Parker's Wine Buyers Guide No 7 by Robert M. Parker, Jr.  is this quote from the introduction, How to Store Wine, page 9:

"If you can somehow get the temperature down to 65 degrees Farenheight or below, you will never have to worry about the condition of your wines."

Here at the Village Wine Cellar we proudly keep  we proudly keep our ENTIRE store a constant "64 degrees temperature controlled," 365 days a year, hence Village Wine Cellar.

This separates our store from all others as temperature is vital to the keeping wine from being spoiled.  Proper storage is crucial to keeping the wine's integrity and quality from being compromised.  As you are aware,  all too often, someone has purchased a bottle of wine elsewhere only to find that their purchase is ruined due to the store temperature was too warm.  This will never happen at Village Wine Cellar.
