  • 2008 Merryvale Starmount, Napa Valley, 375 ml., our price is $14.00 and get the 2nd bottle for $1.00! WINEMAKER'S NOTES: We love Merlot planted in the southern part of the Napa Valley, and in particular from Carneros, for its robust fruit flavors and added structure. We handpick and carefully sort the fruit before it undergoes extended maceration for increased color and intensity. The wine is aged for 20 months in 25% new French Oak barrels and bottled unfiltered.

The resulting wine is deep ruby in color with very bright aromas of cherry and ripe raspberry with notes of bittersweet chocolate, subtle toast and cooking spice. A focused entry onto the palate leads to a round fleshy mouthfeel. The finish is long with lingering notes of cocoa powder.

  • 2009 Gundlach-Bundschu, Estate, Sonoma Valley, 91 pts., The Tasting Panel, Winery Retail is $30.00, our price is $29.00 and get the 2nd bottle for $1.00! Tasting Notes: Aromas of violets, dark plum and black spice are followed by a fleshy palate of fresh plum and black raspberry flavors, woven with black tea, licorice and truffle. Elegant tannins add weight and a polished texture and lead to a bright, lush finish. Delicious upon release, this Merlot will benefit from five years of  cellaring from vintage and continue to age gracefully for at least ten years. Vineyard Notes: Sourced primarily from the Bundschu family's 150+year-old Rhinefarm Estate Vineyard, located on the southwest slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains, just eight miles north of San Pablo Bay. Steep southwest-facing hillsides of shallow, rocky soils of volcanic ash and alluvial wash. Pervasive maritime breezes and long daylight exposure allow fruit to develop intense concentration while retaining vibrant structure. A small amount (less than 3%) sourced from warmer vineyard sites adds lushness to the midpalate.

This Week's Village Wine Cellar Features
Sonoma and Napa Reds!

  • 2008 Whitehall Lane, Merlot, Napa Valley, 90 pts.; Winery Retail $28.00, Our Price $20.00: This smooth as silk Merlot delivers richness that is hallmark Whitehall Lane. The aromas of ripe plum, blackberry and violet are immediately engaging and expand to flavors of plum, berry, dried cherries and sweet vanilla. It is beautifully balanced gaining complexity from the Syrah and structure from Cabernet Sauvignon. Its finish is long with a lingering hint of toasty oak.
  • 2009 Pahlmeyer, Merlot, Napa Valley, 94 pts., Wine Spectator; $77.00: Deep purple in color, the 2009 Merlot offers olallieberry and freshly-baked gingerbread on the nose. Plush tannins overlay a well-formed structure, while flavors of roasted herbs and concentrated mountain-grown blackberries blend togetherseamlessly. The weighty palate hints that this wine will continue to evolve beautifully with proper cellaring. The finish features lingering notes of whetting stone and blue raspberries.
  • 2010 Decoy, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma County, 91 pts.; Was $25.00, Now $20.00: Reflecting the character of each growing season, the Decoy Napa Valley Cabernet is made to be opened and enjoyed upon release. It is rich and appealing with fragrant, lifted aromas of mulberry, raspberry and currant with hints of rhubarb and mocha. The soft-toned fruit flavors dominate the plush and inviting palate with engaging spice complexity. This supple and approachable wine has a lingering finish framed by structured tannins.
  • 2009 Duckhorn Vineyards, Merlot, Three Palms, Napa Valley, 95 pts.; $95.00: With abundant red fruit notes and signature Three Palms minerality, this is a classic expression of the qualities that have made this vineyard legendary in the world of California Merlot. Aromas of cherry, raspberry and red currant are underscored by hints of cola and freshly rained on river rocks. On the palate, the tannins are firm and structured, supporting ample currant and fig flavors, as well as enticing spice. This age-worthy wine will benefit from decanting in its youth.
  • 2009 Quintessa, Rutherford, Napa Valley, Red; $129.00: A fresh floral, violet aroma mingles with plum and currant in the nose. On entry, the wine is supple with pleasing richness and density that leads through the midpalate. Warm clove spice, sassafras and a touch of vanilla complement nuances of toast to deliver a complex mix of flavors and texture in the mouth. The wine finishes long and satisfying with dark berry fruits, cassis and chocolate. - Winemaker Charles Thomas
  • 2010 Caymus, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, Special Select; $135.00: "Every year we think Special Selection can't get any more - well, special - and we're reminded not to underestimate Caymus. The darkest purple imaginable, the 2010 is a cannon blast of ripe dark berries, plums, caramel and chocolate. It's the only wine to ever be named Wine Spectator's "Wine of the Year" twice, and this is one of their best ever."
  • 2009 Opus One, Proprietary Red, Napa Valley, 93 pts., Tanzer; $225.00: "Full medium ruby. Wild, flamboyantly expressive aromas of black raspberry, crystallized blackberry, smoke, leather, licorice, bitter chocolate and cedar, lifted by violet and spices. Smooth, mouthfilling and decidedly dry, with a lightly dusty character to its flavors of dark fruits, minerals and game. The broad, very long finish features building tannins. Quite different in style from the higher-pitched 2008, which was tighter and more floral at the same stage of its evolution."
  • 2010 Kongsgaard, Cabernet Sauvignon, Atlas Peak, Napa Valley, 98 pts., Parker; $200.00: "Shows the rich velvet texture and vibrant intensity typical of the mountain vineyards of this vintage. This crop was just under one ton per acre, and this Cabernet/Merlot blend is defined by the concentration that the low yield assures. Galloni found the wine to have "incredible finesse, energy and sheer class".
  • 2010 Kongsgaard, Syrah, Hudson Vineyards, Napa Valley, 98 pts., Parker; $200.00: "From Hudson Vineyard this wine has impressed us with its suave richness since it went to barrel after the fermentation. Antonio Galloni described it as "a huge wine with tons of depth to the fruit in a dark, brooding style. Game, ash, licorice and a host of other varietal aromas and flavors emerge from this extroverted, impeccable wine."

Village Wine Cellar - Where we keep our entire store at a constant 64 degrees

From Parker's Wine Buyers Guide No 7 by Robert M. Parker, Jr.  is this quote from the introduction, How to Store Wine, page 9:

"If you can somehow get the temperature down to 65 degrees Farenheight or below, you will never have to worry about the condition of your wines."

Here at the Village Wine Cellar we proudly keep  we proudly keep our ENTIRE store a constant "64 degrees temperature controlled," 365 days a year, hence Village Wine Cellar.

This separates our store from all others as temperature is vital to the keeping wine from being spoiled.  Proper storage is crucial to keeping the wine's integrity and quality from being compromised.  As you are aware,  all too often, someone has purchased a bottle of wine elsewhere only to find that their purchase is ruined due to the store temperature was too warm.  This will never happen at Village Wine Cellar.
