  • 2009 Bodega Colome, Malbec, Estate, Argentina, 92 pts. Parker, 90 pts., Wine Spectator; $29.00: This Colomé Malbec is produced mainly from pre-phylloxera vines planted in 1854. Bodega Colomé vineyards are bio-dynamically and sustainably farmed at an altitude of 5,500 to 8,500 feet and are believed to be the highest vineyards in the world. The sandy and alluvial soils yield small crops and produce deeply colored and  concentrated wines which capture the soul of this distinct terroir.  Winemaker Comments: The color is deep, dark red with a magenta hue. This wine is layered on the nose with blackberry, licorice, violet, bitter chocolate and spices. The flavors are rich with layered fig paste, plums, cassis and blackberry fruit. Subtle French oak flavors are well balanced and fully integrated through the mid-palate and well into the finish, which is long and round.

  •  2008 Arenberg, Shiraz, The Dead Arm, McLaren Vale, Southern Australia, 92 pts. Tanzer, 91 pts. Parker, 90 pts. Wine Spectator: $64.00: The heady aroma is both powerful and pretty with notes of fennel, purple flowers and blossom mingling with ripe, varietal purple fruits and black pepper. The oak is hardly evident which allows fruit and soil complexities to emerge with edges of rhubarb and red mulberry and savoury characters of dried herbs, game and spice. The palate opens with anise, black pepper, graphite and restrained dark ch erries before it gives way to seductive mulberry, plum, licorice and spice. It has great power, depth and length with very vibrant, gritty fruit tannins providing immense structure. Notes of anise and spice linger for a long time after the last sip. The Dead Arm 2008 strikes a rare balance of power, complexity and finesse with impressive structure that will reward those with patience to cellar it. Cellaring Potential While enjoyable in youth, this wine will reach its full potential with bottle age up to at least 20 years. The considerable structure and depth will ensure that the fruit characters will develop over time revealing more complexity and providing immense interest. This wine is best stored in an environment free on direct sunlight and with consistent temperatures between 10°C and 15°C.

This Week's Village Wine Cellar Features!
Malbec and Shiraz

  • 2010 Piattelli Vineyards, Malbec, Premium, Lujan de Cuyo, Mendoza; $15.00: Medium red-ruby. Aromatic nose offers blackberry, violet, spicy oak and a suggestion of stony minerality. Supple and fine-grained, with bright acidity framing the currant and blackberry fruit and accentuating the peppery herb and spice notes.  Finishes a bit green but the tannins are even and sweet. This still needs a year or two to unwind.
  • 2010 Achaval-Ferrer, Malbec, Mendoza, 91 pts., Parker; $15.00: "The 2010 Malbec was sourced from three vineyards, two of which are 66 and 86 years of age, with the wine aged for 9 months in French oak. It is a super-fragrant offering featuring racy red fruits, spice box, incense, and floral notes. Pure, sweetly-fruited, and elegant in the glass, this intense, lengthy Malbec can be approached now and over the next 6-8 years."
  • 2009 Altocedro, Malbec, La Consulta Reserva, Mendoza, 92 pts., Parker; $30.00: "The 2009 Malbec Reserva was sourced from vines averaging 75 years of age and spent 15 months in a mix of new and second-use French oak. It delivers a step up in richness from the Ano Cedro cuvee, along with greater density, succulence, and length. Plush on the palate, it conceals enough structure to evolve for another 2-3 years and will be at its best from 2012 to 2021. "
  • 2010 Perrin et Fils, Cotes du Rhone, Rouge; $12.00: Dark ruby color, with purple reflections. Intense nose of macerated cherries and licorice. In the mouth the wine is full-bodied with a generous attack, a pleasant freshness and elegant tannins. This well-balanced wine shows a typical expression of southern Rhône wine with thyme and rosemary aftertaste.
  • 2010 Perrin et Fils, Vinsobres Les Cornuds, 91 pts., Wine Spectator; $23.00: A blend of equal parts Grenache and Syrah, the 2009 Perrin et Fils Cotes du Rhone Villages Vinsobres Les Cornuds reveals abundant aromas of crushed rocks, spring flowers and blue as well as black fruits in its darker, more cool climate style.
  • 2010 Mollydooker Shiraz, Blue Eyed Boy, South Australia, 93 pts., Parker; $53.00:  "Smooth and velvety, with depth and a distinctive range of flavors, offering a minty edge to the black cherry, plum and spice, coming together smoothly on the polished finish. Drink now through 2016. 12,865 cases made."
  • 2010 Neil Ellis, Shiraz, Sincerely, South Africa; $15.00: Medium intensity of colour with plum red and crimson hues. Lifted aromas of dark ripe fruit, pepper and spice are complimented by plummy notes. Well balanced oak supports flavours of cherry, plums and fruit cake with sweet mid palate on the finish.
  • 2011 Orin Swift Cellars, Locations, E-1, Spanish Red; $19.75: The wine has a vibrant ruby color with a scarlet band on the rim. The aromas take a minute to awaken, and then take off into a blend of ripe boysenberry, stone fruit, warm spice, and a hint of oak. A rich entry leads to a robust and savory mid-palate that is intense and concentrated with a persistent finish of ripe, soft tannins. Extremely well-balanced with proper weight and structure, the wine is ready to drink now.
  • 2004 Marques de Caceres, Rioja, Gran Reserva, Spain, 90 pts., Wine Enthusiast; $35.00: "Sweet berry aromas offer touches of marzipan and leather. The palate is ripe, vibrant and grabby, with full tannins framing plum and berry flavors along with accents of tobacco and earth. Lightly oaky on the finish, with a vanilla note and dryness. Shows good weight and clarity; Drink now through 2015."

Village Wine Cellar - Where we keep our entire store at a constant 64 degrees

From Parker's Wine Buyers Guide No 7 by Robert M. Parker, Jr.  is this quote from the introduction, How to Store Wine, page 9:

"If you can somehow get the temperature down to 65 degrees Farenheight or below, you will never have to worry about the condition of your wines."

Here at the Village Wine Cellar we proudly keep  we proudly keep our ENTIRE store a constant "64 degrees temperature controlled," 365 days a year, hence Village Wine Cellar.

This separates our store from all others as temperature is vital to the keeping wine from being spoiled.  Proper storage is crucial to keeping the wine's integrity and quality from being compromised.  As you are aware,  all too often, someone has purchased a bottle of wine elsewhere only to find that their purchase is ruined due to the store temperature was too warm.  This will never happen at Village Wine Cellar.
