As we start 2015, the RDSI project has transitioned much of its activity to nodes and we will shortly start to transition the Vendor Panel to CAUDIT.

We are also continuing to work with the NRN project and with AARNet to conclude the final stages of the handover of DaShNet.

Nodes continue to ingest data and it is good to report that the eight eResearch Service Operators are now collectively making over 16 Petabytes of research data available around the country and a further 39 Petabytes of research data has been approved and funded by the RDSI project.

I am very pleased to be able to report that, at the end of 2014, we were able to acquire additional licences for a range of Aspera software products. As those close to DaShNet will know, Aspera is the software that is being used across the network to drive very high throughput data transfers. These licences will be distributed to nodes in the near future and should allow nodes to offer additional services.

RDSI has recently automated a series of pages displaying a host of key performance metrics across all 8 Nodes.  Not only can you review quantities of data each node is storing, but the specific collections and top level fields of research they support.

Reporting pages will continue to be updated on a weekly basis until June 30, 2015.

Node reporting can either be found under the 'Dashboard' tab on the RDSI website, or by clicking on the links below:

NCI:  Behind the scences of big data storage

Hosting large datasets is not as simple as just copy and pasting the files onto a hard drive - they need to be thoroughly catalogued so they can be easily searched, downloaded and analysed. This article shows how NCI is innovating in the field of big data management.

Pawsey Supercomputing Centre rebranding update

Friday, December 5 saw the Hon Donna Faragher MLC announce the beginning of the rebranding of iVEC to the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre in tandem with launching the final stage of the 'Magnus' supercomputer.

The retiring of the iVEC brand in favour of the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre is a decision made to leverage the high profile of the Centre with many of our stakeholders and allow us to focus our efforts around its capacity to deliver services locally, nationally and internationally.

VicNode reaches 1.5 petabytes of research data

This week VicNode passed the 1.5 Petabyte (PB) mark for research data stored on our infrastructure across both operating centres at Monash University and the University of Melbourne. VicNode is now storing 1.55PB of research data.

RDSI Project Update

DashNet unleashed with additional Aspera features

With the deployment of the DashNet project around 95% complete, all Nodes have started to use their ScienceDMZ hardware to trial or deliver services to their users. The Aspera software installed at each Node provides a high-speed and flexible data transfer mechanisms between Nodes and users, regardless of the location. The Aspera protocol delivers extremely high throughput across any type of network, even across campus networks and to wireless devices.

The Aspera product suite contains a wide and growing range of different tools, and in late 2014 the RDSI project negotiated an extremely exciting deal on behalf of all the Nodes and the Australian research community. This deal provides many researchers access to almost the entire Aspera product suite, including the Aspera Drive (a dropbox-like service), and Faspex (for sending large files as links to anybody via email) amongst other tools, and also the Aspera SDK, allowing developers to integrate the Aspera protocol into their tools. This means Nodes have even more ways of fitting in with and enhancing researcher workflows, to move data into and out of labs, institutional servers, supercomputers and Node storage.

RDSI Project History

RDSI has recently released a History of the RDSI Project, which examines the challenges and successes as we look back at the past 4 years. Meet the people who made it happen and learn how they helped shape the project, as well as the impact it made in the research community.
