Welcome to the RDSI monthly newsletter.

 

This newsletter aims to inform stakeholders throughout the research community of progress on the RDSI project and highlight the significant strides made by all the eResearch Service Operators (Nodes) that work with the project. 

 

It is great to be able to report that the eight eResearch Service Operators are collectively making over 12 Petabytes of research data available around the country and a further 43 Petabytes of research data has been approved and funded by the RDSI project.

 

We encourage recipients to spread the word and distribute this newsletter via email, social media and other mediums to interested researchers, data custodians and research support staff.

RDSI made a splash at this year's conference providing delegates with the opportunity to discuss exciting project developments and particularly showcasing the outcomes of the project.  The RDSI sponsored workshop attracted over 80 registered delegates and featured many high profile researchers making use of the RDSI-funded infrastructure at the Nodes.  These researchers included:

  • Dr Brad Evans: Director - TERN e-MAST Senior Research Fellow at Macquarie University
  • Mr Matt Field: Senior Bioinformatics Manager, ANU
  • Associate Prof Martin Sevior: ARC Centre of Excellence for Particle Physics at the Terascale (CoEPP)
  • Prof David Karoly: Climate Change, Weather@Home project
  • Mr Alex Ip: Senior Data Analyst in High Performance Data at Geoscience Australia
  • Dr Andrew Janke: NIF Informatics Fellow at the Centre for Advanced Imaging at the University of Queensland
  • Mr Othmar Korn: Bioinformatician at The University of Queensland

The presentation titled 'Accessible research storage: RDSI project transitioning and lessons learned along the way' presented by Viviani Paz was well attended and updated delegates on the project progress, its programmes, and the strategies to be used to transition the RDSI funded infrastructure into the sector.  The presentation slides are available from https://www.rdsi.edu.au/other-events

What's new with the Nodes
Keep up to date with Node developments and sub-projects

QCIF:  Beyond 100 - the QRIScloud engagement model
 


QRIScloud, the Queensland node of the national Research Data Storage Infrastructure project, has recently processed its 118th storage request. Currently, QRIScloud has 5.35 PB of storage allocated, with more than one petabyte's worth of requests outstanding. Since launching, QRIScloud has additionally received 19 requests (totalling 1.72 PB) to upgrade existing storage allocations.

 

These figures prove QRIScloud's success, and its enthusiastic take-up by Queensland researchers.

Calls are now open for Astronomy Supercomputer Time Allocation Committee (ASTAC) compute-time applications on iVEC resources at the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre during Q1-Q2 2015.

 

The ASTAC calls allocate available time on supercomputing resources for dedicated national astronomy access.

NCI:  New Technology takes out top prize



A revolutionary rock sampling technology co-developed by ANU and UNSW researchers using NCI's supercomputer has won the 2014 UNSW Innovation of the Year Award.

 

Professors Val Pinczewski and Christoph Arns from the School of Petroleum Engineering at UNSW won the award for their contribution to the project.

Intersect has begun work on the ACT Data Hub project. The project will upload ACT regional data to the AURIN portal recently launched.  

 

The ACT Region data portal is funded through the Australian Urban Research Infrastructure Network (AURIN). The project will arrange agreements for the ACT Government and councils in the ACT region to deliver datasets into the AURIN portal.

RDSI project operational phase transition

The RDSI Project developed a national research infrastructure that supports a wide range of disciplines within a wide institutional and geographic coverage accessible by end user researchers.


The Project has achieved or will achieve all its objectives by the end of 2014 and is delivering the anticipated outcomes to the research sector which benefits the community as a whole. Funding storage for medical collections for example, not only benefits new research discoveries but potentially results in positive impacts for the health of the wider community.

"Previously my thinking was limited by the small amount of storage and computing that was
available to me. I always had to summarise down and minimise the data. I don't have to do that now.
 I don't have to worry about the live disk limitation or the compute resources. 
Now I can keep doing the research as I'd like to see it done."

The RDSI Project outcomes will be efficiently and successfully preserved moving into the future. RDSI's funded legacy will continue through the Nodes, AARNet, CAUDIT and the AAF.

Nodes ingest over 12 Petabytes

 

RDSI funded Nodes continue to ingest large amounts of data and provide researchers the ability to store, access, transfer, process, backup and share their data.
