Newsletter
May 2014

Welcome to the RDSI monthly newsletter.

This newsletter aims to inform stakeholders throughout the research community of progress on the RDSI project and highlight the significant strides made by all the eResearch Service Operators that work with the project. We encourage recipients to spread the word and distribute this newsletter via email, social media and other mediums.

It is great to be able to report that all eight of these eResearch Service Operators are now collectively making over 9 Petabytes of research data available.

Enjoy this month's edition.

Ingest Month generates over a petabyte

The April push for data ingest has resulted in over a Petabyte of information being ingested into the Nodes. These collections are now available for researchers and continue to enrich the wider research community.  Keep up to date with Node Status map which illustrates the total terrabytes approved for ingest and terrabytes available for researchers.  To learn what collections are being held at each of the nodes, visit the Collections page.

Airborne Research Australia

Thirty years of research data collected from the air

Airborne Research Australia (ARA) have been collecting data from the air for thirty years. Based at Flinders University, the research institute's four aircraft, three scientists and pilots, and remote and in situ sensing instrumentation are employed by a variety of research projects.

Global research on greenhouse gases

Twenty years of daily atmospheric measurements contribute to global research on greenhouse gases

RDSI-funded storage at Intersect is helping Professor David Griffith at the University of Wollongong contribute to an international effort to understand changes in greenhouse gases and ozone in the atmosphere, and how these may affect our climate, our environment, our weather, and our health.

QCIF Shooting for 100 Collections

There will soon be 100 data collections on QCIF's Brisbane node.

The node now has a petabyte of ingested data on disk storage, along with approximately 900 TB of data stored on tape.

Of the 95 collections either provisioned or in the works, 31.5% are in environmental science. These allocations add up to 1,244 TB (1.24 PB) and cover a range of topics - climate, environmental acoustics, coral reefs, and species adaptation to climate change.

DaSh Flash Report

A Data Access themed workshop occurred in mid-February 2014.

The workshop resulted in four recommendations that were later approved by the RDSI board:

Topics include:
  • Programmatic Data Access Service
  • Dropbox' like researcher file syncing and sharing system
  • LiveARC meets Aspera
  • LiveARC 12 month license extension

RDSI & CAUDIT Vendor Panel RFP

Request For Proposals (RFP) continue to be accepted on an ongoing basis.  The RDSI & CAUDIT Vendor Panel has been set up to support the procurement of data storage infrastructure, software and services by the RDSI Nodes, higher-education and research sector in Australia and New Zealand.
