The Paleo way to eat!!
Doing it easy -- with Savenor's help
|
|
Diana Rodgers with Clark Farm hens; above, Smoked Duck with Cherry Preserves and Hazelnuts
Diana Rodgers wants to make eating Paleo easy and delicious. This protein-rich meat and vegetable-based diet for those who are gluten intolerant or sensitive, or just want to cut out carbs, is sometimes called the "caveman" diet. "There's a big misconception," says the nutrition counselor and author, that Paleo is "men walking around gnawing on turkey legs." Instead, it's ideally eating naturally-raised meats and organic vegetables and fruits. Diana, who helps her husband Andrew run Clark Farm in Carlisle, has a new book, "Paleo Lunches and Breakfasts on the Go" to make eating Paleo easier.
Savenor's Markets, where Clark Farm's eggs and seasonal vegetables are offered, are go-to stops for the Paleo diet, Diana says. The eggs and meats are very high-quality and naturally raised, and those meats also go into house-made sausages and deli products.
Her lunch wraps such as "Smoked Duck with Cherry Preserves and Hazelnuts" in lettuce leaves (see recipe), or "Pastrami with Pickles in Radicchio" (recipe) are packable to take to the office. Her "Sweet Dumpling Fiery Chili" (recipe) is not only a spicy delight, but makes thrifty and delicious use of leftover meats.
Diana's cookbook comes out Aug. 8; look for news about events and signings on our website; and for the book on Amazon, and in book stores. For more about Diana and on eating Paleo, check Savenor's website.

Lunch in the Park, the Savenor's Way
|
|
Savenor's Lunch in the Park banishes boredom from Wednesday lunches. Located across from University Park off Sidney Street in Central Square, this outdoor grill and lunch counter is drawing more and more devotees in its second season. How about Bahn Mi, Savenor's slow roasted pork shoulder, house-pickled carrots, daikon radish and fresh cilantro topped with a sweet chili sauce on a soft French roll? Yum!! Or a prime beef burger grilled before your eyes with smoked Gouda, caramelized onions and Savenor's own spicy aioli? Outstanding!! Vegetarian options are also offered. On a recent Wednesday, office workers vied for boasting rights on double or even triple cheeseburgers -- even one is a generous fat patty. Others watched as Savenor's chef Mark put the finishing touches on a Bahn Mi. And still others soaked up the sun while waiting in line. You won't want to miss out on Lunch in the Park if you're in Cambridge this summer. The lunch service will continue every Wednesday from 11:30 a.m to 1:30 p.m. until mid-September. (And look for Mark's Bahn Mi recipe in the next Savenor's e-letter!!!)

A Blizzard of Blueberries
Tart-sweet, juicy, and with healthy antioxidants, blueberries are the divas of mid to late summer. Savenor's produce managers, Don in Boston and Mike in Cambridge, are always on the lookout for the best blues -- and at the best prices. Right now it's blueberry season in New England, so Savenor's berries are coming from Chester and Westfield in Massachuetts and Putney, Vt. Blueberry desserts range from the fancy to old-fashioned. Here's Blueberry Grunt ( recipe) with a cobbler-like topping to delight your family and friends -- and won't the kids love the name? And if you're looking for a Paleo-style dessert, try this Yogurt Panna Cotta (recipe).
