Roots of Iowa STEM Extend to 

Borlaug Wheat Fields  

Imagine what it would mean to farmers and consumers if the yield of an Iowa crop were to double within five years. That is exactly what Cresco native and Nobel Peace Prize winner Norman Borlaug did from 1965 to 1970 through the application of his methodical genetics research on wheat.  Famine in many parts of the world became a thing of the past thanks to new disease resistant and high yield strains that kicked off the 'green revolution'.   (continued...)

Awareness Campaign Takes More Steps Forward

 

This week the Governor's STEM Advisory Council took another step ahead in moving STEM awareness forward by launching a 30 second public service announcement (PSA) across the state.  The PSA features Iowa students filmed at Central Academy and the Downtown School of Des Moines. It is one piece of a multi-faceted public awareness campaign initiated by the Council in partnership with Strategic America.

 

Since the partnership began in August and the official campaign launch on December 9, the campaign has made great strides in media coverage, messaging and heightened awareness of STEM in Iowa. 
Lt. Governor Leads Statewide STEM Town Halls

 

On March 6, Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds began the first of six stops across the state's regions to discuss the importance of giving students great STEM education.  Three tour stops in Mt. Pleasant, Marshalltown and Spencer have already taken place, highlighting the progress being made by the Council. The tour stops also showcased student presentations of STEM activities and programs and sought feedback from community members about the ways in which the Council can continue to improve and set priorities moving forward.
