Message from Co-Presidents:
Dear Parents,

As we are in the midst of a busy holiday season, we would like to give thanks to the entire JC Community...for the families who support the fundraisers for the PTA.  Without your support, we wouldn't be able to provide the wonderful enrichment programs and events for the children of JC...for the volunteers who dedicate countless hours to organize and run the programs and events, none of which would happen without them...and to the JC teachers and staff whose dedication make our school a wonderful place for our children to learn both academically and socially.  The smiles on the kids faces throughout the school day reflect what a great community we have at JC!

We hope you enjoyed our JC Toy Shop and were able to get some great children's gifts!  Many thanks goes to Janine Scharff and Janice Meyer for all of their hard work in organizing and executing this fundraiser.  It was very well received by the JC community!  Thank you to everyone for supporting this first-ever event.

We hope that you all have a safe and wonderful holiday season.

Sincerely,
Cheryl Resnick & Sarah Muir

School Improvement Plan

The Julian Curtiss School Improvement Plan has been developed to effectively align with the work of the district on Small Group Instruction in the classroom.  The staff at Julian Curtiss has been focused on improving the quality of small group instruction for two years and we are ahead of the district in some of the planning and implementation of this strategy.  Below is a summary of our Academic Improvement Goal and the action plan that has been completed thus far in 2012-2013.  We will review our Social Emotional Goal in next Friday's Jabberwocky.

Academic goal:

Adult Action Indicator:

Classroom teachers will implement with fidelity the Small Group Instruction component of the framework for Comprehensive Literacy using data from formative assessments.

Student Outcome Indicators:

  1. By Spring 2013, the percentage of third grade students who achieve mastery in reading on the CMT will increase from 70.4% (2012) to 73.4% (2013)
  2. By Spring 2013, the percentage of fourth grade students who achieve mastery in reading on the CMT will increase from 70.4% (2012 cohort scores) to 79% (2013 cohort scores)

3. By Spring 2013, the percentage of fifth grade students who achieve mastery in reading on the CMT will increase from 75.5% (2012 cohort scores) to 83% (2013 cohort scores)

The School Data Team has been working diligently to focus on critical issues of improving teacher practice through differentiation in small group instruction.  Teachers have attended several professional development sessions on Early Release days and Wednesday faculty time that support teacher learning in this area.   JC classroom teachers are in the process of taping lessons for the purpose of studying the implementation of small group instruction in their respective classrooms.  The goal is to view their initial videotape with a "critical friend" or colleague, analyze their professional practice and set a personal plan for improvement.  Follow up video will assist each teacher in evaluating his or her growth.   The staff is trying to measure how well the practice is being implemented.  Teacher reflection on recorded practice is a very powerful tool for improvement!

Please note that Sarah McNulty is the parent representative for the School Improvement Plan.  Sarah is informed of our process will continue to attend important meetings regarding this plan. Questions can be directed to Sarah at sarahmcnulty1@gmail.com.

The JC Service Club would like to thank everyone for their generosity with our Neighbor to Neighbor Drive.  We collected a large amount of non-perishable food items, such as cereals, peanut butter, and jelly as well as winter clothing.  Neighbor to Neighbor, founded in 1975, improves lives by providing for the exchange of food, clothing, and basic living essentials in an atmosphere of kindness and respect.  With food drives similar to ours, Neighbor to Neighbor provides 300,000 meals per year, including 21,000 pounds of lean meat, 4,600 gallons of low fat shelf-stable milk, 150,000 cans of food, 9,000 loaves of whole wheat bread, and 600 cases of fresh produce.  Thank you for supporting the JC Service Club's Annual Neighbor to Neighbor Drive!  We wish you and your families a Happy and Healthy Holiday Season!  Steve Rogowskey & Bill Bogardus, JC Service Club Advisors.

CAR PICK-UP

Please ALWAYS have your signs visible in the front window of your car when picking up your child.  In addition, please make sure babysitters, grandparents, and anyone else sent to pick up your child is aware of our procedures.  This keeps dismissal safe for all.  Thank you.
