ART at JC
The Julian Curtiss Art Club is an advanced learning/community service club for fifth grade students. This is the only art club for elementary students in the district. Ms. Hinkle has been running the JC Art Club for 14 years. There is no cost for the students to join and it is open to all fifth graders. This year there are 17 students participating in this club. The students have an opportunity to work with art media that are not available during regular art instruction as well as receive one/one instruction on media, techniques and processes, such as acrylic paint and canvas; mixed-media sculpture; fiber art, and advanced clay projects.
Students take on school and community based service projects such as, designing and making murals for concerts and other school events; making posters for school events; and making ornaments and cards for Meals-on-Wheels recipients. This year they are working with Creative Connections to create art for their partner school in Russia. Using the Internet as a resource, the students have been able to see the campus where their partner school is located, learn about the city and about school children in Russia.
Julian Curtiss also holds an Art Show in the spring of each school year. This year will be our 12th Julian Curtiss School Art Show. Each year we exhibit approximately 600 pieces of student art representing every student in the school. We have help all year long from JC staff volunteers who frame, label, hang and take down the work. The work on display is created as part of the regular art curriculum. It is not "special" work done just for the art show. We use the art show as an opportunity to help students learn more about evaluating and selecting their own work. Students in grades 2-5 select their own 2-D piece of art from the work completed throughout the school year. The art show usually includes some sort of mulit-media video. Last year, all the video used was created by the students. This year the students will be using the i-pads to video their peers' responses to their work and their personal experiences as art makers.
Congratulations to Ms. Hinkle and our JC Artists!
