Message from the PTO President
Hello Valley Forge Families~

Winter has arrived!  With thanks to your ongoing support and generosity, the season of giving continues. The PTO was pleased to recently present the library with a Japanese storytelling Kamishibai theater. While our traditional "Gifts To School" contributions are made at the end of the school year, we couldn't resist this early gift.  As you can see from the engaged students and smiling faces, it was worth the investment. I think Mr. Wong is having fun too!

On behalf of your PTO board, thank you for your part in this gift,

Heather Bittenbender

Art Goes To School Returns To VFES!

February 9th to 13th

Art Goes to School is an art appreciation program specifically designed for young children. Our primary purpose is to instill an interest and delight in art, in all its forms and styles and from all historical periods. The AGTS volunteers help children discover for themselves an enjoyment in and an understanding of art, not by lecturing, but by becoming "Art Detectives" who will uncover a whole new way of looking at and appreciating art. We will be playing games that involve poems, a scavenger hunt and fun facts trivia.

The 2015 portfolio includes the painting deemed perhaps to be one of the greatest works of art in the world, "Las Meninas" by Diego Velazquez, and one of the copies made by arguably one of the world's greatest artists, Pablo Picasso. We also have an array of American artists represented from Frederic Remington's action portrayal of cowboys breaking in a horse to William Glackens' impressionistic "Race Track" to the serene portrait of a girl and her cat ("Sita and Sarita") by celebrated portraitist Cecilia Beaux. An exciting inclusion this year is discussion of a Philadelphia city mural, "Urban Horsemen", which we feel sure will delight the children. Our portfolio aims to foster discussion on different painting techniques (the pointillism of Georges Seurat, the synesthesia of Wassily Kandinsky and the realism of Albert Edelfert, to name a few) as well as debate about abstraction v. realism and how each artist produces their own version of reality.

We hope our program will engage and excite your children and enhance their understanding of all sorts of different art works. Perhaps you might like to sit in on a session to see what we do - please click on the link for the schedule. Please feel free to contact Sarah Culbert on 610 783 1255 or email her at sarahculbert@hotmail.com with any other questions.

Calling All Music Lovers

It is that time of year when we create memory CDs of our children's voices.  Every year volunteers record our children singing a song, and the CD is then given to the children when they are graduating from Valley Forge Elementary.  We are looking for a few volunteers per class that would be able to come record during your child's music class.  It only takes one or two sessions per class!  If you are interested, please email Tracy Simpson at tem@trdesigns.com.

Friendly Reminder from the Publishing Center

Happy 2015! Just a reminder to please have your 1st through 4th grader submit his/her completed Author Interview to the Publishing Center as soon as possible. The Interview, which was sent home in October, will be used to create the About the Author page at the back of your child's PC book. Having them sooner rather than later allows us to speed up the publishing process. If you need a new Interview form, or if you would like more information about volunteering in the Publishing Center, please contact Tarin Cataldo at vfepubcntr@tesd.net. Thanks!!

2nd Grade Chinese Round Robin

On January 29th, the second grade will spend the morning learning about Chinese culture during a special grade-wide cultural arts event.  The PTO has invited several artists to visit the children and teach them about their art.  Master Cheng will demonstrate the  incredible art of Chinese paper cutting.  Deena Gu Laties will lead  the students through a lesson in art and calligraphy.  John Van Cleve from Nackord Karate will conduct a karate lesson.  The kids will learn about the importance of rice in the Chinese culture from VFE's very own Mrs. Paczesniak.  We will also share some stories about the Chinese New Year.  It's sure to be an informative and memorable morning for our second grade students!

Friday, May 8, 2015

Spring Fair is one of our most anticipated events for the year. Our children enjoy the games, food, winning prizes and cakes, and winning raffles among other activities. We have always had an amazing group of parent chairs who ensure that the Spring Fair is a huge success! This year we need a few more chairs to help us with:

  • Entertainment (1 Co-Chairperson)
  • Parking (2 Chairpersons)
  • Set Up/Tear Down (1 Co-Chairperson)
  • Games (1 Co-Chair)
  • Prizes (1 Co-Chair)

We will provide you with detailed information/binders for each position. If you are interested, please contact Rujuta Mandelia, Head Chairperson, Spring Fair at  rujutamandelia@yahoo.com

Spring Fair 2015 Logo Contest for VFES Parents

We need a logo for Spring Fair this year and we figured you could help us!! The contest is for VFES Parents only. The theme for the 2015 Spring Fair is "Western". We are looking for a logo that reflects this theme and the beautiful spirit of our school. The winner will receive 50 tickets to the fair. The winning logo will be used on all the fliers and brochure, and it will be displayed on our PTO website. The winner will also get a shout-out in the Falcon. Please send your entries to Rujuta Mandelia, Spring Fair Head Coordinator, rujutamandelia@yahoo.com before February 13, 2015.
Teacher Spotlight
With record high enrollment this school year, Valley Forge Elementary needed to hire an additional School Counselor.  Mrs. Wills didn't need to look far to find former VFES student, Meredith McGarrigle to help support the growing student body.  We asked Ms. McGarrigle to share a little information about herself, so that the parents and students at VFES could get to know her better.  This is what she had to say.......

*Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Malvern, PA. I went to New Eagle Elementary but moved in 1st grade and switched to Valley Forge Elementary. Mrs. Wills was actually my 2nd grade teacher!!

*What college did you attend?

I went to Villanova University where I received a degree in Communications with a specialization in Interpersonal Communications and a minor in Psychology. I remained at Villanova to complete my Masters Degree in School Counseling and received my certification for grades K-12.

*Please tell us about your family?

I have 6 people in my family which includes my parents, my two older sisters and one brother. I am a twin so my brother is older than me by only 1 minute!  Our family just expanded as my oldest sister had a baby boy so I am finally an aunt!

*What is your favorite color?

My favorite color is yellow, it is the color of my room!

*What are some of your hobbies outside of school?

Outside of school I like to run and do yoga. In addition I spend a lot of time at Villanova University because I coach the cheerleaders. So if you are ever at a football or basketball game I am probably there!!

*How long have you been teaching?  Did you work somewhere else prior to becoming part of the VFE Staff?

This is my first year as a school counselor. I was at Garnet Valley High School before becoming a part of the VFE Staff but even before that I was an intern at VFE and Conestoga High School.

*Do you have a favorite vacation destination?  If so, where?

I LOVE Cancun, Mexico. I visited there last spring break with my family and we had a great time trying new things like kayaking, sailing, yoga on the beach, beach volleyball, and just relaxing!! We even visited the Mayan Ruins which was quite an adventure!

Being an educator can be both a fulfilling and challenging role.

*What inspired you to become a teacher?

My amazing school counselors inspired me to become a school counselor. As a grew up I realized I loved working with kids and helping others so becoming a school counselor is the perfect fit!

*Think back to when you were an elementary student, what was your favorite part of school or a special memory you would like to share?

Looking back the most memorable times of elementary school were the BIG events where the whole school was involved like Scary Gym or the Spring Fair. I remember looking forward to those activities all year and it is nice to see that those traditions are still happening at VFE!

With VFES' theme of Super Heroes in mind,

*What is your Super Power?

My super power is flexibility! I work between VFE and Devon Elementary schools so being flexible is essential to my day. Being able to adapt and switch gears is important to meet the needs of the students.

Finally, we would like to appeal to your humorous side.

*If you were a fruit or vegetable, which one would you be and why?

I would be a banana because I have a soft center but thick skin! Bananas also are bunched together and since I am a people person I would like to hang with others.
