T&E Care offers school meal assistance program
Tredyffrin & Easttown Care is a local non-profit that helps families in our community in a variety of ways. Because effective learning is best done on a full stomach, T&E Care is supporting families in the T/E School District with a school meal assistance program. This assistance is available to families meeting certain income criteria. Families who are approved for the government free or reduced lunch assistance are not eligible to apply for our program - this program is for families who make over the free/reduced levels but still struggle to afford lunch for their kids. More details about this program can be found in the flyer and details on the acceptance criteria can be found on this short application
which you can download. Any community members interested in helping to fund this important initiative, please go to T&E Care's website (www.tecare.org

Falcon 100 Reading Program Kicks Off

September 22nd!
VFES is pleased to sponsor a year-long program for our students to encourage reading, the "Falcon 100 Book Club". Our theme this year is "The More You Read, The More You Know". Generously funded by the VFES PTO, students are encouraged to participate in this optional reading program. The goal is to read 100 books during the school year (25 pages of longer books count as a book). Books may be read by or to the student. A form with the student's name, teacher and parent/guardian signature is turned in after each 25 books read. Incentives are given as each form is turned in, as well as an entry in the monthly raffle for a Barnes and Noble gift card.
The Falcon 100 Book Club forms and full instructions will be going home with all students this week. The program begins on September 22 and will continue throughout the school year. Happy reading, Valley Forge!

Greetings from the Publishing Center
I hope that the 2014-15 school year is off to a great start for everyone! For those of you new to Valley Forge Elementary, you may not know that we have our very own Publishing Center. 1st through 4th graders write and illustrate original stories, and a group of dedicated parent volunteers help turn those creations into actual hardbound books. A copy of each book even gets shelved in the library, and students can check out their books and those of their friends. Last year, VFES students submitted 420 stories and our volunteers assembled a record 712 books. Way to go!
In order to continue offering this wonderful program (the largest of its kind in the T/E elementary schools), we need a lot of help. There are a variety of volunteer positions available (including typing, proofreading, about the author, titles and laminating, covers, and assembly). Many areas allow you to volunteer from home, while others give you the opportunity to be on-site in school. We are also incredibly flexible - you can volunteer when, and as much time as, your schedule allows. We will have an informational meeting and training sessions later in the fall for our volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering in the Publishing Center or if you would like more information, please email Tarin Cataldo at vfepubcntr@tesd.net. Thank you!

Teacher Spotlight - New Feature!
|
This Week's Teacher Spotlight is On: Krissy Diamond
VFES is happy to welcome Krissy Diamond as the newest member of the Kindergarten Team. As a young woman, Krissy grew up attending Hillside Elementary, T/E Middle, and, eventually, Conestoga High School. She has her bachelor's degree from Loyola University in Maryland and received her Masters of Education from Cabrini College. Mrs. Diamond is married to Mr. Diamond, the well known VFES 2nd grade teacher. Together they have 4 children: AJ (7), Abby (6), Katelyn (3) and Luke (1). Recently, Mrs. Diamond was asked a few questions to help the students and parents of VFES to get to know her better. Here is what she had to say:
Does your family have a favorite vacation destination?
We love to go to Avalon and the Outer Banks in NC. We love the beach and are spoiled that both Mr. Diamond & myself have summers off and get to go often.
What inspired you to become a teacher?
I had many great teachers, some of which are still teaching in the district. As a student, I would always think about what I would do as a teacher. I think I always knew that I would be a teacher when I grew up. Also, I love kids! They really make me so happy.
Thinking back to when you were an elementary student, what was your favorite part of school?
I loved field day. The PE teacher would stand on the roof and toss water balloons down for us to catch, and I loved it! I also remember dressing up as a bear to read the story "Popcorn" to my class. I brought bags of popcorn in for my classmates. "Popcorn" was my favorite book when I was little and it wasn't until we were married that I found out that Mr. Diamond loved it too!
With this year's VFES Super Hero theme in mind, what is your superpower?
My superpower is reading. I love reading children's books and I am so excited to share so many wonderful stories with my students!
Finally, a little something silly. If you were a fruit or vegetable, which one would you be and why?
I would be a grape, because I am with a great BUNCH of kiddos in my class!
