2013 AWFS®Fair Shows Growth in Attendance and Exhibitor Participation
AWFS®Fair 2013 attendance expanded as the show hosted 9,150 registered attendees and nearly 13,500 total participants with 503 exhibiting companies occupying 11% more floor space than 2011, and drawing industry professionals from 58 countries around the world. Woodworking industry professionals met, networked, attended some of the more than 50 education sessions and conducted business over the course of four whirlwind days.
According to Angelo Gangone, AWFS Executive Vice President, "This is the first time since 2005 that our trade show expanded in all categories including buyer and exhibitor attendance, total number of exhibiting companies, exhibit space sold, and seminar attendance. It is a very positive sign for our industry as early indications strongly suggest this trend will continue for our 2015 show.
"AWFS is certainly the most important industry event for North America this year. We are very pleased with our results. After four straight quarters of steady growth in orders, the solidity of the North American market is no longer in doubt," said Federico Broccoli, President from Biesse America.
2013 Trade Show Chair and Board Member, Dan Hershberger from Stiles Machinery, also expressed his view on this year's Fair. "It was exciting to see both the quantity and quality of buyers at this year's AWFS Fair. The results are a definite confirmation that the AWFS staff's commitment to provide a first class event, has paid off. From my personal experience, I felt that booth traffic was similar to what we saw during the peak years - very busy. I just want to say a great big 'Thank You' to the staff of AWFS for recognizing the needs of our industry and producing a show that addressed those needs in such a way that drew buyers to Las Vegas in order to attend the AWFS Fair. I am really looking forward to seeing what 2015 has in store!"
In 2015, AWFSFair will return to the Las Vegas Convention Center, July 22-25. Please check www.awfsfair.org for updates.

President's Message |
Wade Gregory
AWFS® President |
Hello . . .
This is my first commentary in Supplier's Edge and the first thing I want to do is thank former AWFS® President Joan Kemp for her unbelievable service during an extended 5 year term. An association is only as strong as its members, and like many of our members the great recession seriously impacted AWFS in a negative way. Joan led the Association through many tough times and guided the board and staff of AWFS in making many tough decisions. Because of so many critical issues, and to maintain continuity, the AWFS Board positions were temporarily frozen. We had no idea the normal two year term would turn into five, but no matter how busy she was I never heard Joan complain, not even once. We're not letting Joan completely off the hook, but she can now relax a little as Immediate Past President on the current Board Of Directors.
I hope things go well enough that I can pass the gavel on after a normal two year term. During that time, I want to see AWFS rebound to its pre-recession level of prominence and continue to grow and improve far beyond that. To many of you AWFS is the Las Vegas woodworking trade show, but that's only partially correct. The trade show is very important to us, but what you may not realize is that AWFS is a trade association made up of approximately 400 industry members. All of the show proceeds after expenses are given back to the industry in support of things like education, public policy, and regulatory issues. A successful trade show allows us to do so much, not only for our existing members, but for many young future woodworkers as well. A great firsthand example of this are the simply amazing items that were displayed in our Student Design Fresh Wood contest at the show.
I want to thank all of you who participated in the AWFS Fair 2013. Once you saw all of the new products and innovations on the convention hall floor, or attended one or more of the 50 seminars included in the College of Woodworking Knowledge, I'm sure you'll agree it was worth the trip. |
Angelo Gangone
Executive VP
Thank You for Everything, Joan!
The years 2008 - 2012, will never be known as banner years for our industry, especially from the last quarter of 2008 through the 2010 timeframe. It was definitely a time of consolidation and adjustment for everyone and ultimately the strongest companies survived the dramatic downturn. Now as economic factors improve, these "survivors" find themselves leaner and better positioned to take advantage of an improving economic climate. Thankfully, during those difficult years, I was truly fortunate to have a person in my corner that I will always be grateful for. Joan Kemp, of Spectrum Adhesives, was the only president in our Association's history to have served for two and a half terms. Joan was not only a strong leader during a very critical period but was also one of the most encouraging and positive people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. In part, because of her leadership and dedication, our Association is back on solid footing and well-prepared to move forward and write our next chapter. The entire AWFS® staff wants to express our gratitude for Joan's contribution throughout her tenure as our President. Fortunately, we still have her around as she is currently serving on our Board as Immediate Past President.
A Warm Welcome to Our New President
I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome our current President, Wade Gregory, from Flakeboard. Wade has been a very valuable volunteer and 20 year veteran of our organization, having served on the Member Services, College of Woodworking Knowledge® (CWWK®) committees, having chaired the Public Policy committee and of course the AWFS Board of Directors. Over the next two years, the staff and I look forward to working closely with Wade who has already expressed his vision of helping bring the Association back to where we were prior to the downturn, a vision and sentiment that is widely shared by the entire board and AWFS staff. We are all looking forward to the many good things that will come about as a result of his leadership. |

in Fresh Wood Student Woodworking Competition
Student Designs, Woodworking Skills Impress Attendees
Kristoffer Edlund, a graduate of Brighton High School in Cottonwoods Heights, Utah took home the People's Choice Award for his glass-topped table Wrapped Walnut after it received over 100 votes from AWFS®Fair

Edlund now plans to study Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. He also won Second Place in the High School Tables category and took home a total of $1,225 in prize money and a Certificate of Merit. The People's Choice award was sponsored by Wagner Meters.
Mollie Fergurson, a student at College of the Redwoods, Fort Bragg, California, won the Best of Show Award, selected by judges from all of the First Place winners. Her kwila chair dulcius ex asperis, inspired by Kaare Klint's Danish modern deck chair, received First Place in the Post Secondary Chairs category. Now that she has completed the school's two year certificate program, she is pursuing a livelihood as a fine furniture maker and woodworker. Ferguson was awarded a coveted wood sculpture designed by the late renowned wood artist Sam Maloof and manufactured by Maloof Woodworking. She also received a Rikon 14" Bandsaw, a total of $2,225 in cash prizes and a Certificate of Merit. The Best of Show Award is sponsored by Rikon Power Tools.
Overall, twenty-two students took home over $19,000 in prize money from the 2013 Fresh Wood student woodworking competition at the AWFS®Fair in July. AWFS was able to award more prize money than anticipated thanks to Woodcraft and its customers, who raised nearly $7,000 since April 2012 through an ongoing online campaign on Woodcraft.com. AWFS covers project shipping and the majority of travel and hotel costs to bring the students and their teachers to Las Vegas.
Eighteen of the forty finalists were high school students, the remaining twenty-two were students at universities, community colleges, woodworking specialty schools or trade technical schools, five finalists were from Canada. Several teachers had multiple student finalists. Kip Christensen, Brigham Young University; David Welter, College of Redwoods; Peter Boeckh, Fletcher's Meadow Secondary School; Jeff McCabe, Lincoln East High School; Jim Buker, Ontario High School; Jack Stone, Palomar College; David A. AWFS®Fair CWWK® Bests 2011 Attendance |
College of Woodworking Knowledge® Up Five Per Cent
Attendees seeking business information and enhanced skills in the AWFS College of Woodworking Knowledge (CWWK) education program surpassed 20011 enrollment by 5%, with over 2400 registrations for the fifty sessions spread over five days, including the pre-show day.
Presenters included 80 speakers and moderators who delivered information in formats ranging from 1 1/2 hours seminars to panels, open forums and an all-day training workshop on Lean Manufacturing. Said one attendee, "I'm very happy, I'm getting out of the show what I was looking for."
Three seminars, Estimating and Project Management, Lean Continuous Improvement, Understanding CNC Routers and Marketing Online drew the biggest crowds, while two "open forum" sessions -- a new format for the CWWK -- Design and CAD/CAM Software and Lean Manufacturing were well received. In the software session, five software vendors tackled an hour and a half Q&A with attendees seeking general information and answers to their specific design, software and machinery questions. The Lean Continuous Improvement forum gave attendees the opportunity to ask questions pertinent to their companies regarding the challenges on keeping a Lean process in perpetual motion.
Attendees returned well over a thousand session evaluations, rating the speakers and sessions as well as providing feedback on the overall education program and suggested topic ideas for 2015. The highest rated session and speaker went to Roland Johnson for his presentation, Mastering Handplanes, a two-hour lecture/demo, with videotaped projection for audience viewing. He also captured the highest rating for the handout he distributed to the session participants. Wrote one attendee, "Roland is an excellent teacher with total knowledge of his subject area." Roland is an editor with Fine Woodworking magazine.
Taking the top prize for the early morning show floor SMART (Special Machinery and Relevant Technology) seminars was James Swanson of Stiles Machinery for his delivery of Machining Solutions for Edge Polishing Acrylics. "Nicely done," wrote one attendee. "This was informative and worthwhile to those seeking these solutions." The SMART seminars are popular as they take place in the exhibitor booth and offer an up close and visual experience with various machines and technology processes.
Rounding out the top five seminars were: Incorporated Marquetry in the Modern Shop, given by Paul Schürch, Master Craftsman; Lean as a Growth Strategy, delivered by Gary Conner of Lean Enterprises Training; and Understanding the (Ever) Changing World of Finances and Taxes with Tim Northrup, Vice President of Finance with Stiles Machinery.
Attendees took advantage of three free seminars on Regulations and Certificates Impacting the Industry; Strategies for Reducing Citations in the Woodworking Industry; and Benefitting from Industry-Education Partnerships.
The seminars were relocated this year to the main floor, in closer proximity to the exhibit show floor, a fact which was much appreciated by seminar attendees.
Companies or individuals interested in speaking in the 2015 AWFS Fair education program can watch for a Call for Proposals form which will be posted to the fair web site in 2014 at www.awfsfair.org.

Gather your pit crews and soup up that belt sander! A hugely popular event, it was serious speed at the 2013 Belt Sander Racing Association's National Championships held at the 2013 AWFS®Fair, where more than 1,000 fans packed the grandstand to see the sawdust fly.
The Belt Sander Racing Association (BSRA) was created by Accuride to bring together belt sander racing enthusiasts from all over to have fun and compete at Accuride-sponsored events throughout North America. The first BSRA National Championships debuted in 2007 at AWFS Fair in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Accuride BSRA races are scheduled throughout North America at trade shows and Accuride distributor open houses. The regional races will culminate in the National Championships, which will be held at AWFS Fair, in Las Vegas, Nevada in odd numbered years.
Both class entries are encouraged to "dress up" their sanders to add personality. You'll see everything from Hello Kitty to Elvis themed racers-which just add to the fun of the event.

Teachers Take Advantage of AWFS®Fair
Teachers from coast to coast were present at the show this year, resulting in the highest number of educators to ever attend the show. This is likely due to AWFS® efforts to reach out to educational institutions to decrease the gap between industry and education and to stimulate student interest in the wood products manufacturing industry as a viable career choice.
Teachers have also been hearing about the Woodwork Career Alliance (WCA) skill standards and the skill evaluator training which was offered at the show. During show hours the WCA trained fourteen teachers as well as industry members. Being trained as a skill evaluator allows the teachers to encourage their students to obtain a WCA Passport booklet and get evaluated on a variety of tools and machines. This then illustrates to potential employers their expertise in the standardized skill sets most used and valued in the industry.
In addition to the draw of the WCA training, many teachers came with their students who were competing in the Fresh Wood competition. Teachers also took advantage of the seminars offered expressly for wood educators (called the Teacher Track seminars) as well as the full roster of seminars.
AWFS provided a room for teachers to gather at the end of Thursday's show day for a little networking. Approximately 30 teachers came to meet their peers and share information. Many had never been to the show and one administrator proclaimed, I didn't know the wood industry was using CNC!" Teachers were clearly excited about the WCA training and the opportunity to learn more about the industry and more closely align their curriculum with it-which is just what is needed by an industry badly in need of a new crop of skilled workers. They were also very gratified to be acknowledged, recognized and invited!
If you or your company has an interest in increasing your involvement with industry-education initiatives, please contact Nancy Fister, AWFS Education Director at nancy@awfs.org or 323.215.0303. The momentum is growing. Come ride the wave!
