Evangelical Lutheran Church log
Immanuel Lutheran Church
Our Purpose:
To gather people, nurture faith,
grow in God's love, and serve God's world.

Pastor Dan

Dear friends in Christ at Immanuel,

I'm hoping for a good turnout on Wednesday, November 7, to meet the new Bishop of the New England Synod, James Hazelwood. Bishop Hazelwood is on whirlwind tour of the six New England states, intending to visit each of the 185 congregations in our Synod during his first year in office. He has made an impressive beginning toward this goal in his first two months in office. His Sunday schedule is full well into 2013. But when I contacted him to invite him to Immanuel, he offered this first Wednesday evening in November as his earliest available date that would also work with our schedule. So we will gather for a pot-luck supper beginning at 6:00 pm in our gym, to be followed by a time of conversation and mutual story-telling to help us get acquainted with Bishop Hazelwood and for him to learn about our life and ministry here. The event will end no later than 8:30 pm. Feel free to come a little later than 6 or leave a little earlier if you must, but please come (children are especially welcome!) so that Bishop Hazelwood meets the "real" Immanuel and not just a handful of "regulars".

Our November focus will be on "the practice of partnership" as an important component of practicing our Christian faith. Our Bishop's visit highlights our partnership as part of the New England Synod and ELCA. A special webcast event (Radical Christian Life: Equipping Ourselves for Social Change) in the middle of the month highlights our special ecumenical partnership with St. Francis Episcopal Church here in Holden. Our "something different" Sunday School experience on November 4 will deepen the partnership of adults and children in finding some "Money Sanity Solutions" in our homes and families. In these ways and more, we will pay attention this November to the blessings of being baptized into a community of faith. We are not Christians left to live and witness to our faith alone. We have partners, mentors, teachers, friends, ready to pray with and for us and to serve beside us as we better connect Sunday morning with the rest of the week.

I'm deeply thankful for the partnership expressed by those who have submitted Estimate of Giving cards for 2013 at the end of October and ask that others who have not yet done so please join in this effort to grow in giving so that we can have a total response to report to our Council by the middle of this month so that our 2013 budget-building process can proceed.

And as we do each year, we're seeking some especially thankful partners in Christian faith to share their stories of thankfulness at our Thanksgiving Eve service on November 22. These brief testimonials from thankful hearts are always a highlight of worship in November, a month that begins with a remembrance of our mystical partnership with the saints who have gone before us and ends with a vision of our eternal partnership with those who gather around the throne of Christ our King. So let me or Pastor Aaron know if you'd like to tell your thankful story on November 22.

Remember also to "fall back" and change your clocks on Saturday, November 3. Cherish that extra hour of sleep that you'll have to make up for the one you lost last spring. Sleep is good and necessary for health. It is also a spiritual discipline. You can't sleep and stay in control of your life, even of your breathing. Sleep is a letting go that we have to practice every night. How's this for good news: you can practice your faith even when you sleep!

TO GATHER PEOPLE

SOMETHING DIFFERENT SUNDAY - NOVEMBER 4

INTERGENERATIONAL SUNDAY SCHOOL IN THE GYM

On Sunday, November 4, Sunday School will be an intergenerational experience around tables in the gym as we examine some Money Sanity Solutions together. Everyone

is welcome to attend and participate, share stories of money and meaning in life and learn skills and practices that can foster sharing and saving before spending. Both Pastors will be leading the session. Don't miss it!

WOMEN'S CIRCLE NEWS

The next Women's Circle meeting is Monday, November 5 at 9:30a.  Our hostesses will be Sue Enman and Evy Frederickson with devotions by Valeda Schmucki.  Hope you can join us!

BISHOP JAMES HAZELWOOD TO VISIT IMMANUEL

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 7

POT-LUCK SUPPER AT 6:00PM

New England Synod Bishop James Hazelwood is still in the early months of a first year of visits to each of the 185 congregations of the Synod. He will be coming to Immanuel for a pot-luck supper on Wednesday, November 7, beginning at 6:00 pm and followed by an evening of storytelling and sharing in our gym. It will be a chance for us to get to know him and the broader work of our Synod as well as for him to get to know Immanuel. That can only happen if a sufficient number and cross-section of the people of Immanuel are here, so please try to set aside that evening and come to help us welcome our new Bishop. If you can't make it at 6:00 pm for supper, come later. If you need to leave early, that's OK too. We expect the event to conclude around 8:00 pm.

LIVE WEBCAST HOSTED BY IMMANUEL

AND ST. FRANCIS CHURCH

AT ST. FRANCIS CHURCH, FRIDAY & SATURDAY,

NOVEMBER 9-10

"RADICAL CHRISTIAN LIFE:

EQUIPPING OURSELVES FOR SOCIAL CHANGE"

Every year, the Trinity Institute in New York City hosts a conference at Trinity Church, Broadway and Wall Street, with renowned speakers, workshops and worship. That event is being webcast live this year to several locations around the country and Immanuel has partnered with St. Francis Episcopal Church to be one of a handful of site in Massachusetts to host the webcast. The webcast will be at St. Francis Church on Friday evening, November 9 from 7:00 - 8:30 pm and on Saturday, November 10 from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm. The keynote speaker will be Sister Joan Chittister, a Benedictine sister and a leading voice for the essential connection between spirituality and social action for more than three decades. She will speak on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon. Saturday morning's gathering will include local workshops similar to those happening at the event in New York. To attend the event in New York would cost a few hundred dollars plus meals and lodging. To attend in Holden is free. Let Pastor Dan or Pastor Aaron know if you'd like to attend. More information can be found at the event's website, trinitywallstreet.org/institute.

BEGIN YOUR THANKSGIVING WITH WORSHIP

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 7:00 PM

Thanksgiving Eve worship is a long-standing tradition at Immanuel as is hearing stories of thankfulness from one another in the midst of the service. Plan to begin your Thanksgiving holiday in church singing songs of thankfulness and offering prayers that thank God for all life's blessings. And if you feel God nudging you to share a brief story of thankfulness or a reflection on thanksgiving, let one of our pastors know. The three or four such testimonials that we include in our Thanksgiving Eve worship always make this service a worship highlight of the year.

CROP HUNGER WALK

RESULT ARE IN!

  CROP logo

THANK YOU to all those who made this year's CROP Hunger Walk such a great success. Kathy Mills reports that "In our 34 year history, this is the 4th best year and depending on the additional funds that come in (we always get more), we may do better than that." What great news to hear! We are truly blessed to be part of such a generous, giving community, and those blessings will now be shared through CWS with many less fortunate and in great need.

The day was sunny, cool and dry so it was perfect for our walkers, human & canine alike. Six area churches participate in this event: Unitarian Universalist, St Francis, First Baptist, First Congregational, Chaffin Congregational and Immanuel Lutheran. Total walkers numbered 111 adults & youth with 9 dogs joining in. We enjoyed a delicious light soup & bread meal and music by 'Hit the Bus" in the gym upon our return.

Our Holden walk raised a total of $11,650, bringing our 34 year total to $215,295. Truly amazing!!! Immanuel walkers raised $4,592.25. We will get an additional $1,000 from Thrivent for Lutherans. And if you didn't get to make a pledge yet, you still can over the next few weeks (by contributing on-line through our church's website, by giving money to Joan, Diana or Kathy, or by putting a check in the offering plate made out to Holden Crop Walk). As the final figures are tallied, we will gladly share them with you all. Many thanks to ALL who walked, pledged, baked, helped with serving, set up & clean up. We could not do this without you!

Yours In Christ,

Kathy Mills, Joan Orton & Diana Provencher

YOUTH NEWS

IMPORTANT UPCOMING EVENTS

At 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 3, all high school seniors and recent high school graduates are invited to gather for our first "Life After High School" conversation. We'll chat about getting ready for whatever comes next. Lunch will be served! Please join us!

For our next youth planning team meeting on November 4, we're not meeting at noon as usual. Instead, we'll gather at 5:00 p.m. at St. Francis Episcopal Church for dinner and a brief worship worship with the Episcopalian youth, then do some more preparation for fund raising and next summer's mission trip to Philadelphia. All of the congregation's teens are welcome!

The next Confirmation class is being held on Friday, November 8 and Saturday, November 9 at St. Francis Episcopal Church, not at Immanuel. St. Francis and Immanuel are teaming up to present a discussion from the Trinity Institute in New York on Radical Christian Living. The speaker is Joan Chichester, a wonderful leader in modern Christian spirituality. Confirmation students will have the chance to participate in this discussion, and all other members of Immanuel are welcome as well! Friday's event begins at 6:30, as usual.

Our next overnight Youth Mission Stay begins on Saturday, November 17 at 10:00 a.m. Our topic is "One God, Three Faiths." We'll be looking at what Christians, Jews, and Muslims share, what makes us unique, and what we can learn from one another. We're also planning to experience worship with Temple Emanuel Synagogue and prayers with the Worcester Islamic Center. And of course, as usual, we'll have lots of fun, food, and fellowship. Note that all attendees need new permission forms for the new school year, available on Pastor Aaron's office door or on the church website. Friends are always welcome!

NURSERY SCHOOL NEWS

Wow, it is hard to believe October has come and gone. Thank you so much to all who purchased Butter Braids or donated to our playground renovations. The school raised $960.00 to put towards the renovations. These renovations will hopefully be done before the winter is upon us. We would also like to send a big THANK YOU to Don Roberts for all of his hard work helping with all of the school's repairs. We do not know what we would do without him!

The preschool children had a ton of fun visiting the Ecotarium last month. They learned all about the 5 senses. All of the children had a blast dressing up in their costumes at the Halloween parties and singing for their parents and siblings.

NOVEMBER DATES TO REMEMBER

November 12h the Nursery school will be closed to observe

Veterans Day.

On November 16th the children will be taking a field trip toPrice Chopper to purchase food for the Wachusett Food Pantry.

WOMEN'S BIBLE STUDY

Women's Bible Study will meet on Monday, November 12 and 26 at 7:15p.  Don't forget to bring your workbooks (and payment for them if you haven't paid already).

THURSDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY

10:30 - 11:30 AM: THE BOOK OF JOB

If you are free on Thursday mornings, you are welcome to join an informal Bible Study group that meets in Room #2 of Lawson Hall from 10:30 - 11:30 am. In November, the group will begin a study of the Old Testament book of Job, a reflection on good and evil and the nature of the divine/human relationship. The central question of the book is usually understood to be some version of "why bad things happen to good people," but looked at more deeply, it delves into the nature of the divine human relationship. The question at the center of the book is whether or not prosperity and wellbeing are indicators of God's favor, and whether or not humans can love God when the blessings do not flow. Job is a masterpiece of literature and a timeless story. It only takes one hour a week to discover its beauty. All are welcome.

COMMITMENT SUNDAY FOLLOW-UP

ESTIMATE OF GIVING CARDS FOR 2013

The Herald needed to go to press before we had the results from our Commitment Sunday pledge offering, but if you were not in worship on October 28 and have yet to return an Estimate of Giving (pledge) Card for 2013, please mail or bring it to the church as soon as possible. As soon as we have a clear indication of the financial support that we can expect in the coming year from our members, our Council will begin to build a balanced budget that apportions those gifts to the various ministries of the church. That budget will be formally adopted by the congregation at our Annual Meeting at the end of January.

TO SERVE GOD'S WORLD

INTERFAITH HOSPITALITY NETWORK (IHN)

IMMANUEL SCHEDULED TO SERVE AT NEW IHN SITE

91 June Street
Here we GO!  This month we are scheduled to serve IHN at their new location at 91 June Street in Worcester.  The dates are:  Sunday, November 18 to Sunday, November 25.  We still need a few helping hands to make Immanuel's turn a success.  Please see Gail Raney and/or watch the weekly bulletins for more information.

MEN'S MINISTRY - BROTHERS SERVING OTHERS

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 7:00-10:00a

Our group will meet again on November 10 at the church before we head out to do some work.  No need to sign up ahead of time, simply come to Immanuel at 7:00a with your work gloves.  Hope you can join us.

WACHUSETT FOOD PANTRY

The holiday collection for the Wachusett Food Pantry is beginning this month. Donations may be given the first two weeks in November. This annual food drive helps stock the Wachusett Food Pantry for the fall and winter months. The items needed are cereals, muffin mixes, hamburger helper type meals, peanut butter, jams/jellies, canned tuna and chicken, soups of all kinds, noodles, spaghetti and other pastas, pasta sauce, pizza sauce, canned fruits and vegetables and basic staples like sugar, flour and salt. Please avoid items in glass containers. Donations can be placed in the boxes located near the entrances to the church. Thanks in advance for your help!

JOHN STREET SOUP KITCHEN

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 24

No turkey this year?  Nope, not this year.  Since many of the meals at the John Street Soup Kitchen in November include turkey, this year Immanuel is changing the menu on November 24 to ham.  We'll serve a nice ham dinner, complete with mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, squash and pumpkin pie.  We'll still need lots of help.  If you could supply us with a cooked, pre-cut (spiral) ham, we'd be most grateful.  We'll need five in all, cut up and placed in an aluminum pans.  Also, we'll need 2-3 pans of squash ready to serve.  And if you can't cook, then you are invited to come and serve with us.  A sign-up is in Lawson on the Missions board.  See Jen Langhill with her empty aluminum tins for details.

'Tis the season to be giving, and there's not many things nicer to receive than a loving, home-cooked, warm, Thanksgiving meal!

A Thanksgiving Prayer

"Thank you, Lord, for You have truly blessed me
with a warm home, good food, and my family.
Today at this meal I pray you'll truly fill me,
So tomorrow to another a blessing I'll be!"
