October 2013 Newsletter

October is the beginning of the change of seasons in Tampa. It just so happens that Fall is the best time to plant trees and shrubs - the heat of summer has ended, the day lengths are shorter and plants will spend the winter growing their underground root systems.  Planting now allows trees and most shrubs to grow their root systems several months prior to the heat of summer.  The result will be a stronger and healthier plant.

So if you have been thinking about adding landscaping, now is the time to make your decision and give us a call or email us so we can help you get them planted.

History of Halloween
                 Pumkin

The purpose of Halloween was originally to mark the end of summer and the harvest, and the beginning of winter, and to commemorate the passing of the dead.

Straddling the line between fall and winter, plenty and paucity, life and death, Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition. It is thought to have originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming ghosts.

In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints and martyrs; the holiday, All Saints' Day, incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows' Eve and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a secular, community-based event characterized by child-friendly activities such as trick-or-treating. In a number of countries around the world, as the days grow shorter and the nights get colder, people continue to usher in the winter season with gatherings, costumes and sweet treats.

Healthy Green Lawn Care
Watering Tips & Restrictions

As we go in to the Fall Season, over watering is a big problem for Florida lawns. Residents often over water thinking - the more water the lawn gets the greener it gets. WRONG!  Providing too much water to your turf grass will cause it to have a shallow root system. This is when the roots are only a few inches under the soil. The favorable depth should be around a foot. Over watering will also increase the likelihood of weeds, disease like brown patch disease (rhizoctonia brown patch), and insects.

University of Florida scientists recently conducted a study to see what would happen if automated irrigation systems were monitored to work more in sync with nature. Homeowners whose irrigation timers were reset monthly slashed water use up to 30 percent compared with homes that just let the systems run on previous settings. That's enough to fill six swimming pools each year!

Generally, turf grasses require no more than an average of 0.3 inches of water per day.  If rainfall occurs, irrigation should be suspended according to the rainfall amount.

Tree-mendous Tampa Program

City of Tampa - Free Tree Program

If you live in the City of Tampa - You're in Luck!

Tampa recognizes the benefits of its trees and is committed to the conservation and enhancement of its environment.  The Tree-mendous Tampa Program, also known as the Community Tree Program, is free and provides individuals and neighborhood associations with trees for planting on City land, greenways, and street rights of way.

The program fosters the replenishment of Tampa's valuable and gracious tree canopy. Trees are a community resource that provides tangible benefits, in terms of visual and aesthetic attributes, environmental assets, health benefits, and economic value.

Please note that each site is inspected to carefully match the new tree to existing landscape conditions by the City of Tampa. Allison Lawn & Landscape Services recommends that you stay away from oak trees because of their root system.

This program is offered by the City of Tampa is not associated with Allison Lawn & Landscape Services, Inc.

I learned that we can do anything, but we can't do everything, at least not at the same time. So think of your priorities not in terms of what activities you do, but when you do them. Timing is everything.

Halloween Safety for Kids & Teens

Kids love Halloween! They get to dress up and get free candy! What a perfect holiday! Give your kids some precious Halloween memories that they'll have for life.

Most kids already know things that they can do to be safe, like how to cross the street, not to talk to or go with strangers and things like that. But we adults know how exciting Halloween can be and that can make you forget to be careful.
