Battling the Pet Bulge

According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, an extra 3 pounds on a 15-pound Boston Terrier is the equivalent to 30 pounds on a 150-pound person! And a recent study shows that pet obesity is getting worse. Obese dogs and cats can suffer from heart disease, reduced life span, diabetes, osteoarthritis, and more.

The growing pet obesity epidemic has caused all of us here at Pet Dominion to become advocates for lowering the statistics. Nationwide, 55% of cats and 53% of dogs fall into the overweight or obese category.  This is why we're tackling this problem year-round, but we renewed our commitment to your pet's healthy weight goals during National Pet Obesity Day last week.  A day is not enough to combat this serious health concern. We're continuing our partnership with Purina's Project Pet Slim Down, but this year, we have a brand-new tool: Purina Certified Weight Coaches on staff to help you achieve a healthy weight for your pet through diet and exercise.

To learn how we can help your pet, read more in our latest blog article.  Give us a call at 301-258-0333 today to schedule an appointment.  Let's work together to give our pets longer, healthier lives.

Laser Therapy Gets a New Resource

Many of your pets have benefited from our laser therapy service here at Pet Dominion.  We were one of the first clinics in the area to use the technology, and we have been so happy to see all of your success stories.  We're excited to announce that Dr. Bassett's son, Justin, has joined our staff and brings some extra knowledge about pain management.

Justin became certified in laser therapy this past summer. He has a Bachelor's Degree in biomedical science and worked towards his doctorate in human physical therapy at Lynchburg College.  He has been very impressed with the power of laser therapy. "Although there are many different therapeutic modalities out there for treating pain, there are few to none that relieve pain and accelerate healing like the Class IV therapy laser".  And, he has seen the effects firsthand after performing six treatments on a 14-year old German Shepard with osteoarthritis.  "When I started treating him, he was only able to stand on all four legs for 2 minutes and would not venture out more than 15-20 feet from the back door. After the fourth treatment, the pet's standing and walking endurance had doubled from its original state," Justin happily reports.  Give us a call today at 301-258-0333 to find out if laser therapy is right for your pet.  Justin is also able to do at-home visits within a close proximity.
