Pet Dominion Goes Green!

In an effort to help the environment and provide you and your pets with more efficient service and care, we are in the process of "going paperless"!  We couldn't think of a better spring cleaning project!  Our doctors and staff are making the transition to electronic medical records so we can continue to improve our standard of care here at Pet Dominion.  We appreciate your understanding while we work to better our environment and better serve you and your furry friends.

Spring has (finally) sprung and we're celebrating with a new addition to our veterinary staff, a huge summer perk for our dogs, and a little spring cleaning.  Plus, spring marks the return of some unwanted pests.  Read on to find out what you can do to keep your pets safe.  But first, meet our new vet Dr. Barbara Harris!

Welcome, Dr. Barbara Harris!

Dr. Harris Dr. Harris was born and raised in Wilmington, Delaware.  She obtained her BA degrees in Economics and Political Science from Northwestern University before going to work as a Management Information Consultant in Chicago.  After working as a consultant for 4 years, she decided to return to school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to obtain her degree in veterinary medicine.  Following graduation, Dr. Harris did a one year internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the Michigan State Veterinary Teaching Hospital before beginning her career in private practice.

Most recently, Dr. Harris, her husband, stepson, and daughter moved from Delaware to the Rockville area so her husband could pursue his career passion as a full-time swim coach.  Dr. Harris and her family are all avid swimmers and her stepson, Andrew was a member of the 2012 US Olympic Team and competed in London.  When not working with animals or swimming, Dr. Harris also enjoys traveling, reading, and hiking.  Dr. Harris' family also includes a dog and three cats.

Lodging Dogs Beat the Heat

Awning We're excited to announce that we have a covered outside play area for our lodging and daycare dogs!  They have it made in the shade during the scorching summer heat and a dry refuge during inclement weather.  Our new awning has been great on rainy days, but our staff is most excited about a shady, cool spot for the dogs to play during the summer heat.  Last week, some of our daycare and lodging dogs got to try it out as temps soared into the upper 80s and even lower 90s.  Everyone seemed to enjoy some relief from the heat.

The awning looks to be a prominent and popular feature this summer here at Pet Dominion.  So, don't forget to bring your dog to daycare or overnight lodging even on the hotter days.  Your furry friend will be happy to have the outside time without the oppressive heat beating down on him/her.

Spring Parasite Awakening

The rebirth of spring also means an increase in the number of pesky parasites to spoil your pet's outdoor fun.  Thankfully, there are many wonderful preventives available to keep your pets, your home, and your family safe from these intrusive pests.  Here at Pet Dominion, we believe in year-round protection, but with the onset of spring and April's designation as "National Heartworm Awareness Month", it's a great time to assess your pet's risk and take stock of your supply of preventives.

You've heard the adage "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure", but it's especially true for preventing parasites on and in your pet.  Since heartworm disease is transmitted by the bite of a mosquito, pets in all 50 states are at risk.  It is especially prevalent in the warmer, humid climates of the south, but many cases are reported each year in Maryland.  The disease is expensive and difficult to treat in dogs and can be deadly if left untreated.  Although it is seen less frequently in cats, it's more fatal because there are currently no drugs approved for treating it.  While the price of preventives may seem steep, it's nothing compared to the cost of treatment or the potential loss of your pet's life.
