Dear Sunroad Tenant,

Hello Summer!

We hope you have been having a fantastic summer so far! It is a great time of year for boating in Southern California so make sure to get out there and enjoy your boat! If you are a fisherman, San Diego has seen a large influx of exotic species in US Waters including Yellowfin Tuna, Bluefin Tuna, Yellowtail and Dorado!

Catalina Trip! We are planning a trip to Catalina Island on Sept. 12-14. Contact Wayne in the marina office for more information and to reserve a spot!

We have some special items in the newsletter for you this month, from Coast Guard Safety Courses to the Make a Wish Tuna Challenge! Take a look!

Sincerely,

However, you don't have to fish to participate in this fun family event - Admission is FREE to the Awards Banquet & Celebration, Sunday, Aug. 24 beginning at 10 AM. Since the party doesn't end until 4 PM, enjoy a Hawaiian food and fresh fish lunch with dessert for just $15.

All participants will enjoy live music, a live and silent auction, progressive and target raffles and, at the end of the day, some lucky winner will drive home in a brand new 2014  Mazda 3 iTouring with SKYACTIV technology!

100% of all net proceeds go directly to the San Diego Foundation of Make-A-Wish.

We hope you'll come help us celebrate our 25th year of helping to make wishes come true!

Silver Surprise: Millions of Anchovies Swarm San Diego Surf

Anchovy school at Scripps Pier, July 8, 2014
Anchovy school at Scripps Pier, July 8, 2014

"It's just fish, fish, fish!"

David Checkley studies fish for a living, and even he was at a loss for words when trying to describe swimming with millions of anchovies off the coast of San Diego Tuesday (July 8).

The school of fish measured about 50 feet (15 meters) wide and 325 feet (100 m) long, and could have contained anywhere from 1 million to 100 million fish, he said.

No one knows why the anchovies came so close to shore, Checkley said. The fish typically prefer cool water, and San Diego's surf hit 74 degrees Fahrenheit (23 degrees Celsius). Anchovy eat small zooplankton, and Checkley said it's unlikely they were searching for food close to shore. The sheer size of the group also means the fish would have quickly gobbled through any food, he added.
