Clock is ticking on Medicaid Parity Payments

AAFP has been lobbying at the federal level to extend the Medicaid Primary Care Parity program past its expiration date of December 31st of this year.  The program, active for the 2013 and 2014 calendar years, increased Medicaid payments for specified primary care services to Medicare levels for certain primary care physicians.  If this program is not extended past this year, our members will see drastic cuts to their Medicaid payments, forcing many of them to limit or stop seeing Medicaid patients altogether.

At the moment, there are three pieces of legislation at the federal level that support extension of this program - two in the House of Representatives, and one in the Senate.  The AAFP is supporting the Senate legislation, Ensuring Access to Primary Care for Women and Children Act (S.2694).  To that end, IAFP sent a letter in support to the state of Illinois as the Dept. of Healthcare and Family Services is also working to ensure the program's continuation.

Now, AAFP and IAFP need YOUR help to stave off these looming cuts to Medicaid physician payment! Please use a Speak Out letter that is now available for both the Senate and the House to urge them not to cut your Medicaid payment.

SIU Center for Family Medicine Gets the Grant!
The SIU Center for Family and Community Medicine in Springfield has received a $250,000 grant from the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration to expand mental health services and integrate behavioral health into the patient care visit. The Center is part of Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield.
With the new funds, two behavioral health specialists who joined the center as part of a pilot project last year will continue their services.
The integration program is part of the center's designed Patient Centered Medical Home, which promotes collaborative patient care. The center's designation as a Federally Qualified Health Center allowed it to be eligible for this federal grant. "These funds will allow us to continue to provide a holistic and team-based approach to improve health," said Dr. Janet Albers, chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine.
The SIU Center for Family Medicine is designated as a Federally Qualified Health Center or FQHC, also referred to as a community health center. The SIU Center for Family Medicine Clinic, 520 N. Fourth St. in Springfield, is a 28,000 square feet facility featuring 33 exam rooms and two procedure rooms with a staff of 43 professionals who support the administration of the residency program and clinic.
