Illinois at AAFP National Conference

With dozens of students, residents and faculty on hand, Illinois had a great experience at the AAFP National Conference of Students and Residents in Kansas City August 7-9.  Illinois was represented by Resident Delegate John Trimberger, MD (PGY2- West Suburban) and Rush Medical College student Karena Rounsaville.  UIC student Mustafa Alavi served as the AAFP National Coordinator and was elected to the position of student representative to the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM).   IAFP student board member Kristina Dakis of UIC was also on hand to help spearhead the student interest in the Illinois Residency reception and the upcoming Family Medicine Midwest conference.

Resident Report from John Trimberger

My first experience at National Conference was in 2011 as a second year medical student representing the North Carolina Academy. At that time the excitement of the residency search and the chance to meet students from all over the country was overwhelming and eye opening.

This year, attending as a second year resident now committed to a career in family medicine, my experience was all the more invigorating and inspiring. I had the opportunity to represent my residency program, West Suburban, and meet eager medical students from all over the country interested in coming to Illinois. Spending time at our booth and at the Illinois Programs Reception, I made new connections with residents from all over the state, likely my future colleagues.

Up in the residency fair, our state was well represented by 18 out of 27 programs who spent time sharing the unique opportunities available through their training programs.  These same programs combined resources to host a Friday night reception at the Midland Theatre to continue their conversations with students in a less formal setting.   Thanks to all the programs, and their PEOPLE who made this conference such a success for our state.
