Chicago hosts My Time to Quit Week

August 18-22

Smoking Cessation Clip Art The Chicago Department of Public Health declared that "Nobody quits like Chicago!" with a week-long campaign.  Monday's kickoff press conference included IAFP past-president Javette C. Orgain, MD as advocates urged Chicago to continue to end smoking's toll on the City.  Join them and help your patients quit for good.  Find resources on www.MyTimetoQuit.com! And you can always use AAFP's Ask and Act program for your practice.

REPEAT Proposal for a New Member Group Supporting Single-payer Coverage

Alap Shah, MD, a new family physician from Oak Park, has a strong interest in advocating for single-payer health care (or 'Improved Medicare for All'), and wishes to start a member interest group to foster this discussion within the IAFP, and ultimately the AAFP.  With the recent implementation of the ACA, and legislative discussions at all levels about its successes and failures, it's an opportune time to discuss a system that he believes will truly provide affordable, accessible, and equitable health care for all.  If you are interested, or would like to know more, please contact Dr. Shah directly at alap.pradip.shah@gmail.com.

Submit a resolution - Submit your resolution via email to Vince Keenan at vkeenan@iafp.com by September 23rd for your resolution to be placed on the Assembly agenda.  Resolutions received after September 23 will be offered as a late resolution, whereby 2/3 of voting members must vote in favor for the resolution to be introduced and considered.

Smoke-free Campuses bill signed into law

Last Sunday, Gov. Pat Quinn signed SB 2202 which will make all Illinois college campuses smoke-free effective July 1, 2015.  The bill was sponsored by state Sen. Terry Link of Waukegan and state Rep. Ann Williams of Chicago, both Democrats.  IAFP supported this bill as another effective tactic to keep young people from becoming adult smokers while protecting all from secondhand smoke.

 

230 Q&As about the Medicaid Managed Care Rollout

HFS released their 53-page document answering 230 questions (categorized) from the HFS Webcast on the procedures for enrollment and general managed care roll-out.  The link is on the HFS care coordination webpage and answers many specific questions from providers.

AAFP launches Medicaid parity call to action on Speak Out

On July 30, Sens. Patty Murray, D-Wash., and Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, introduced S. 2694, which would extend the Medicaid payment hike for two more years.  AAFP supports the bill to continue enhanced Medicaid payments and work towards a permanent solution.  Please use the simple Speak Out template letter to urge Senators Dick Durbin and Mark Kirk to support the bill.

"Breastfeeding Solutions" is an app that is free this month, offers advice for women struggling with breastfeeding and can get you a $1 credit if requested from the Amazon App store during the month of August.

Education available from the Illinois Poison Control Center

In 2013, the Illinois Poison Center (IPC) received almost 45,000 calls (62% of all exposure calls) involving children and adolescents 18 years old and younger.   IPC provides FREE resources to family physicians/staff and their patients/caregivers on poison prevention as well as how and why the IPC's 24/7 toll-free helpline 1.800.222.1222 can be of help.

 

Online Poison Prevention Education Course and Resource Center (PPERC): Provides basic information about poison prevention and insight into how U.S. Poison Centers can help medical professionals and their patients. For healthcare professionals and general public 18 years and older.  After completing the course, persons can order/download a variety of information and materials to distribute to patients, family, friends and community (stickers, magnets, fact sheets, prevention activity sheets, posters, etc.).
